Germany Effectively Banned Citizen Vigilante Movie So Elon Musk Posted The Entire Film On X
Germany tried to bury a film, so Elon Musk handed it to the world instead.
The billionaire uploaded the full action thriller “Citizen Vigilante” to X this week after the movie was effectively barred from release in Germany. Musk, a critic of mass migration, made the entire feature viewable on his platform for 48 hours, according to the film’s official X account.

The film stars Armie Hammer as a man who turns to vigilante violence against criminals and corrupt officials after a personal tragedy, The Post Millennial reported. Directed by Germany’s Uwe Boll and released in the United States by Quiver, the movie drew condemnation over its depiction of migrants as violent offenders. No government decree shut the film down. Germany’s FSK rating board withheld any age classification, a designation known as “Kein Kennzeichen” that legally blocks a movie from theaters, retail shelves, and streaming services across the country, according to ReadySteadyCut.
Boll rejected the board’s reasoning and accused regulators of political motives. “The rating system refused to give us a rating [in Germany], so now you can only watch it if you bring in a Blu-ray from Austria or Switzerland,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “And I think they did that on purpose. It was a deliberate censorship decision. I hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.”

Boll said the story drew from a 2016 Hamburg case in which teenagers who gang-raped a 14-year-old girl walked free with suspended sentences, Variety reported. He cast Hammer, who faced sexual abuse accusations in 2021 that produced no criminal charges, calling him a strong actor sidelined by cancellation.
The clash has become a transatlantic flashpoint over censorship and speech, with supporters casting Musk‘s repost as defiance of European cultural gatekeeping, according to The European Conservative.
