A verbal dispute between two groups of young men erupted into gunfire at around 1:25 p,m. local time at Fairlane Town Center, Dearborn police chief Issa Shahin said, CBS News Detroit reported. Both sides allegedly carried handguns into the mall, and investigators suspect the attack was not random. Dearborn Police flooded the mall alongside Michigan State Police and and University of Michigan-Dearborn police, and the mall was evacuated, according to WXYZ.

Several people allegedly connected to the shooting were pulled in for questioning by cops, but Shahin could not confirm if the shooter was among them, CBS News Detroit reported. Footage circulating online appeared to capture the moment the shooting take place with gunshots ringing out and mutliple people fleeing. “Oh my God,” a woman can be heard saying as the person holding the camera is running. Three young men, all thought to be in their late teens or early 20s, were struck, according to the police chief. One died at the mall and another passed at a hospital, while the third was hospitalized, police said. In the parking lot on the far side of the building, a person running from the gunfire was reportedly hit by a car.

Witnnesses alleged that the shots rang out on a lower level, WXYZ reported. “I heard arguing and fighting that was going on inside the mall,” a witness recalled.

Weston Fantroy, who was buying a birthday gift for his daughter, told Local 4 he heard four or five shots and bolted outside.

Mayor Abdullah Hammoud urged the public to keep away. “Please stay clear of Fairlane Mall while police secure and investigate this incident,” he wrote on Facebook.

Shahin said the department would chase down everyone involved. “The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority. Shootings and other acts of violence are entirely unacceptable, and we will hold everyone involved fully accountable,” he said.
