Firm Allegedly Orders Dog Food Destroyed Over Possible Metal And Plastic, Learns It Was Sold Anyway

Mars Petcare U.S., Inc. issued a voluntary recall of PEDIGREE® dog food that potentially has sharp metal or plastic pieces inside, alleging that they attempted to have it destroyed but it was sold anyway.

The firm issued the recall for PEDIGREE Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2oz with the LOT Codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC on July 2, according to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement. The company alleged that they had dispatched both the lots to a third-party vendor to destroy it ,but it “appears to have been fraudulently diverted and sold into the marketplace in the United States.”

“The recalled metal may contain metal or plastic foreign material. The potential presence of sharp metal and plastic foreign material in the cans could pose a hazard to your dog,” the firm wrote.

Mars Petcare U.S. warned could cause lacerations, choking, or gastrointestinal blockages to the dogs consuming it. (RELATED: Authorities Uncover Grisly Dog Graveyard At California ‘No-Kill’ Rescue)

The company said they had not received any reports of pet illnesses or injuries related to the food as of July 2.

Mars Petcare U.S. recommended that those who suspect they have bought one or both of the products not feed it to their animals, but instead contact the company to get it replaced. If someone is worried they have already fed the food to their animals, then they should reach out to their veterinarian, according to the statement.
