The White House Domestic Policy Council released a on the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (NMAH). The July 4 report detailed explicit displays andpromotion of gender ideology at a museum intended for American families. (RELATED: Here Are 5 Insane Books Elementary Schools Are Offering Kids)
“Our central finding is not that the Museum has simply added overlooked stories, corrected perceived errors, or broadened its historical scope,” the report read. “Rather, it is that Museum leadership has explicitly adopted an ideological framework that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance to be taught or celebrated, but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit, and discourage our citizens.”
One “Entertainment Nation” exhibit featured explicit content, including a magazine cover featuring nude young women and footage of drag queen performances, according to the report. Another exhibit had a “Girl Germs” magazine that showed two partially naked women embracing. The magazine was about female masturbation, the report read.
An exhibit titled “Illegal to be You: Gay History Beyond Stonewall” featured a sadomasochistic “crotch harness” while a “We Belong Here” exhibit featured a “chest binder” for a “trans nonbinary” skateboarder Leo Baker, according to the report.
A “Girlhood (It’s Complicated)” exhibit displayed a page from a six-year-old girl’s diary where she wrote about praying to God “every night for my penis to grow,” according to the report. Although Jennifer wrote, “I hope no body reads my diary,” her thoughts were on full display for visitors, an image shows. The exhibit did not refer to Jennifer as a girl.
The report noted that the NMAH “exhibits and educational materials present gender as fluid, treat biological males as girls or women, and fold contemporary advocacy for transgenderism into the Museum’s treatment of female childhood development, women’s history, and women’s sports.”
The museum glossary of terms in its “Becoming US” education program does not define what a biological female is, according to the report. “[A] child may feel they are a girl some days and a boy on others, or possibly feel that neither term describes them accurately,” the glossary reads, adding that it is “best to ask people who are gender fluid which pronouns they prefer.”
NMAH Director Anthea Hartig veered into activism over abortion in a 2024 speech, according to the report. “[W]e are moreover committed to our mission: empowering people to create a just and compassionate future by exploring, preserving, and sharing the complexity of our past. I feel that a future without federally protected reproductive health care rights is not informed, just, or compassionate,” she said, the report read.
“[W]e work to reframe the traditional celebratory narrative of U.S. history for visitors,” Hartig claimed in a May 2020 NMAH press release.
“I always be in an a state of becoming an historian, and I know what a head start I had, propped up as I was and I am by the cushions of whiteness and the pillows of the bourgeoisie,” Hartig, a white woman, said in a November 2020 video on the University of California, Riverside, YouTube page. Following on President Donald Trump’s “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” Executive Order in March of 2025, the report blasted the NMAH under Director Hartig’s leadership.
“Today, the Museum fails to ‘place before millions who visit the Nation’s Capital each year a stimulating permanent exposition that commemorates our heritage of freedom and highlights the basic elements of our way of life,’” the report wrote. “We must be committed to restoring truth and sanity in how American history is presented and taught.”
“No American wants the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to be a system of ideological activism,” Director of the Domestic Policy Council Vince Haley told the Daily Caller. “It is our hope and expectation that the Smithsonian will eventually rise once again to that noble obligation — to tell America’s story for our children, the world, and future generations of Americans.”
A Smithsonian spokesperson issued a statement June 5 to The Hill. “For more than 180 years, the Smithsonian has served the American public with nonpartisan and independent scholarship, and we remain committed to doing so,” the spokesperson said.
The Daily Caller reached out to the Smithsonian Museum of American History for comment.
