Olympic Gold Medalist’s Brother Competes As Trans Athlete In Women’s Sports

Joshua Liu, the brother of Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu, has been competing as a woman and racking up wins in several different high school sports in California.

Joshua Liu, who now goes by Jaylin Liu, has competed in women’s basketball, ultimate frisbee, and track, according to reporting from Reduxx. Liu saw some success in 2025 but exploded onto the podium in 2026, taking home several gold and silver medals across sports, most recently winning gold in the women’s 400-meter at the Tri-County Athletic League Finals on May 8. During a women’s ultimate frisbee tournament, Joshua’s performance was described as “extremely dominant.”

Joshua was a surrogate child from the same mother as Alysa and his triplets, Julia and Justin. They were all given to non-biological father Arthur Liu, along with Selina, who was from a different surrogate mother. When the children were young, Arthur married Qing Xin Yan (Mary), who had previously been married to one of the founders of the Zhong Gong cult, according to reporting by Reduxx.

Alysa originally gained notoriety for publicly supporting America despite seemingly holding liberal values during the 2026 Winter Olympics, where she won gold in women’s singles and team figure skating. During the Winter Olympics, Alysa changed her pronouns from she/they to she/her.

From a young age, Arthur rigorously trained his kids, particularly Alysa, to be elite Olympic athletes. “My worry was that I’ll have never lived with my family,” Alysa, told The Guardian. “I’m growing up so fast, so young. I knew that if I continued skating, I would never have a chance at home.”

A representative from HeCheated, a platform that tracks trans males in female athletics, spoke to Reduxx about the situation.

“Rules allowing boys into girls’ sports often put female athletes who may have male family members, like Alysa, in an impossible position where their loyalties are torn and they are forced to choose between supporting female athletes and fairness in athletics or a beloved family member whom they love,” the HeCheated spokesperson told Reduxx. “Firm rules protecting the female category put the responsibility of saying no to these boys on athletic officials rather than young women and girls.”
