Suspect Throws Incendiary Device Outside Immigration Court In New York, Officials Say

A suspect is in federal custody after allegedly “deploying an incendiary device” outside of a federal building in New York City, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told the Daily Caller.

“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York,” FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X. “The individual is in custody and two minor injuries reported thus far.”

The FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is “investigating the scene,” a federal building which contains Federal Plaza Immigration Court, and has taken the individual into custody.

“What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted Monday to X. “I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody. My team is in touch with the NYPD and we will support the federal investigation. Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city — and hold accountable any who threaten that.”

The New York Police Department (NYPD) told the Daily Caller that authorities responded to the scene at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, stating that the suspect ignited a fire and set off fireworks outside the federal building. NYPD told the Daily Caller the ongoing investigation is now under federal jurisdiction.

26 Federal Plaza is the location of the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building and James Watson Court of International Trade. The building contains the New York Federal Plaza Immigration Court on the 12th floor. The field offices for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and FBI are located in the building, along with an office of the U.S. Social Security Administration regional office.

The Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review have not responded to the Daily Caller’s requests for comment.
