The Justice Department is investigating Republican Florida Rep. Cory Mills, with at least part of the inquiry centered on his personal finances, according to ABC News, which cited multiple people familiar with the situation. MS NOW first broke the story and described the probe as a criminal investigation, citing two sources who did not reveal its focus. A third person told MS NOW that the FBI last year questioned at least one individual about Mills’ money, alleged wrongdoing, and people close to him.

Mills said he had no idea any of it was happening. Told about the investigation when MS NOW called him for comment, the congressman replied, “This is the first I’m hearing about it,” according to the outlet. He guessed that the matter tied back to the ongoing House Ethics probe and insisted the campaign side had already been settled. “The FEC dismissed all the campaign stuff,” Mills told MS NOW, referring to a Federal Election Commission decision to drop its own review. The Washington Examiner separately confirmed the existence of a DOJ investigation through a source familiar with it, though that outlet reported the purpose of the probe remains unclear.

The House Ethics Committee has been looking into Mills since August 2024 and created an investigative subcommittee in November 2025, the Washington Examiner reported. That inquiry covers a February 2025 episode in which Mills was accused of domestic violence. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The congressman was also the target of a high-profile expulsion push from Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace, who declared that “the swamp has protected Cory Mills for far too long,” the Examiner reported. Mills previously dodged a censure resolution in November 2025 after most House Republicans voted to send it to committee, the Daily Caller reported.

Former Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson jumped into the FL-7 race hoping to unseat Mills, betting that the ethics investigation has left the seat vulnerable. Mills faces a crowded Aug. 18 GOP primary and closed the second quarter with just $81,000 on hand, the Examiner reported.
