Fauci’s Own Diary Undercuts His Public Dismissal Of COVID Lab Leak

Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has released parts of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s private diary revealing some of what he really believed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Fauci, who served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during President Trump’s first term, recounted a February 1, 2020 call with several high-level scientists who were divided over the possibility of “deliberate insertion,” the idea that Wuhan lab workers intentionally added a protein spike, genetically engineering the COVID virus.

Some of the scientists believed that deliberate insertion was possible considering how Dr. Zheng-Li Shi of the University of Wuhan had worked for years on gain of function research in coronaviruses in an effort “to allow adaptation of the spike protein to bind to the human ACE2 receptor,” Fauci recalled. “We could not let this go,” Fauci added.

A day before the conference call, scientists reported concerns that the “spike protein could not have occurred naturally since it would require an evolutionary jump that they found nowhere in bat isolates,” according to his diary.

“They bring up the possibility that this could have been deliberately inserted and either accidentally released or deliberately released by a crazy person in the lab, the former being the most likely,” Fauci wrote. “Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier.” (RELATED: The Fauci Files: Five Explosive Findings Declassified By Tulsi Gabbard.

Despite taking the possibility of deliberate engineering of the COVID virus seriously in private, his tune was much different in public. Months after his conference call, Fauci completely wrote off such concerns in a May 2020 interview with National Geographic, calling the lab leak claims “circular arguments.” Sen. Paul pointed out that “Fauci said the virus was ‘totally consistent’ with an animal-to-human jump.” Other scientists and health leaders in Fauci’s circle, however, were more skeptical.

Sen. Paul has been targeting Dr. Fauci regarding the origins of COVID-19 for years, demanding the declassification of official COVID-era documents and communications connected to Fauci. The two have verbally sparred at congressional hearings over Fauci’s alleged suppression of the lab leak theory.

Dr. Fauci will testify next Wednesday in front of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after being subpoenaed, and will face panel Chair Sen. Paul.
