Mamdani hosted a press conference Monday morning outlining his administration’s plan for “five city run grocery stores, one in each borough.”

Mamdani announced “a collection of essential staples that will be predictably 30% cheaper at all of our city run grocery stores.” The mayor said these items would include “all fresh produce, meat, and seafood, along with 20 other essential items like cheese, milk and bread.” (RELATED: NYC Councilman Accuses Mayor Zohran Mamdani Of Only Helping Parts Of City That Voted For Him)

“Once a month, our five city run grocery stores will set prices for this core set of goods at 30% below retail prices. No exceptions, no gimmicks,” Mamdani announced. “These savings will last for the entire month.”

Currently, the city has announced the locations of two of these city run grocery stores, including “La Marqueta” in Manhattan and “La Peninsula” in the Bronx, according to the press conference. The mayor replied “there is more than enough market for existing grocery stores and one, city run, grocery store,” when asked how this policy will affect currently existing grocery store owners.

The mayor said that 65,000 New Yorkers live within 10 minutes of the proposed site for “La Marqueta,” and 150,000 people live in the area of “La Peninsula.”

Monday’s press conference was held to announce to the city releasing a “Request for Proposal” (RFP) for “an operator for the NYC groceries initiative,” said Jeanny Pak, Interim President and CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

“We are looking for a best in class grocery partner,” Pak announced. “An operator with the experience, expertise and track record to run successful stores, manage complex supply chains, and deliver for working people.

“The city’s role is clear. We set the mission, the standards, and the expectations,” Pak continued. “The city is providing them foundation and grocery ready sites, as well as covering the rent and property taxes, and establishing a single public brand.”

The RFP is currently open and is looking for applicants who can “help turn the city’s vision into a reality.”
