Career Criminal Charged With Shooting, Killing Former NYPD Officer’s Son

A career criminal who allegedly shot and killed the 12-year-old son of a former New York Police Department (NYPD) officer has been charged with second-degree murder.

William Ferrer, 45, has also been charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to an arrest affidavit referenced by CBS News New York. The alleged shooting occurred around 5:00 p.m. Saturday in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, the outlet reported.

Jacob Freytes, nicknamed “Kai,” was shot in the chest during the incident and fled to a bodega on Elliot Place to seek help, according to surveillance video. In the surveillance video, a man appears to open fire when the 12-year-old clutches his chest and runs into the store, the New York Post reported.

Freytes was playing baseball with his friend Marlyn Rosario when he went to the bodega to buy a ball, Rosario told CBS News New York.

“I started crying. Me and Kai [Jacob] had been best friends. He was a nice kid; he didn’t deserve that,” Rosario said.

In addition, two adult males, not identified, were injured during the shooting, with one struck in the buttocks and the other struck in the foot, according to the same complaint, the New York Post reported. Both men were transported to the hospital and are in stable condition, the complaint states.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) identified the 12-year-old as the son of retired Detective Jesus Freytes in a Sunday statement shared to Facebook.

“Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare. On behalf of the men and women of the SBA, our hearts go out to the Freytes family, as we pray for them during this unimaginable and painful tragedy,” the statement read in part.

Ferrer was arguing with a group of people when he allegedly shot into the group, and Jacob was struck by a bullet, according to ABC 7 NY. The 12-year-old was not involved in the argument.

A judge ordered that Ferrer remain in jail without bail ahead of a Friday court appearance, according to CBS News New York.

The suspect reportedly has a lengthy criminal history, which includes possession of a forced instrument (1999), alleged menacing and criminal contempt (2001), possession of stolen property (2004), marijuana possession (2009), drunk driving (2009), and drug possession (2013), police told the New York Post.

The Daily Caller contacted the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI), who did not immediately comment on the incident.
