Mamdani’s Tax Cash Grab Doxes Thousands Of New York City Homeowners

New York City’s Democratic Socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, doxed thousands of the city’s homeowners in the process of increasing the city’s taxes.

A list of the wealthiest New Yorkers who qualify for the pied-à-terre tax was shared by the Department of Finance (DOF), allowing anyone to download the comprehensive list and view the tax assessments, property addresses, and registered owners’ names. To qualify, homeowners must own an unoccupied non-primary residence worth more than $1 million. Mamdani said Thursday that his administration had sent mail notifying every owner of a second home valued at more than $5 million across the city’s five boroughs in preparation for the tax.

“The best city in the world deserves the best parks, libraries, and schools in the world. That’s only possible when we all pay our fair share.”

The tax was implemented in partnership with Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul and was announced by Mamdani in April, according to the DOF.

“On Tax Day earlier this year, I promised that we would tax the rich, and with our new pied-à-terre tax, that is exactly what we have done,” Mamdani said after the process had been finalized Thursday. “We will diligently implement this law and ensure that we collect what working New Yorkers — and this city — deserve.”

The DOF’s commissioner, Richard Lee, said that, along with mailing notifications, a designated webpage was launched to help “property owners navigate the new requirements,” but it is also where the full doxing list is located.

“As implementation continues, we will ensure the process is carried out transparently and with careful consideration at every step,” Lee said.

A DOF spokesperson told the New York Post that the list was released for public inspection pursuant to state law.

Republican Council Minority Leader David Carr, who is also listed, told the New York Post on Monday that, “It’s a reckless and foolish move, especially considering there are potentially thousands of properties on this list that do not qualify as second homes or whose owners will successfully dispute their inclusion.”

The Post also estimated that more than 960,000 residences and individuals are listed as potential payers of the tax despite the mere 31,000 homes cited when the plan was first proposed to the public.

The Department of Finance did not respond to the Daily Caller’s request for comment.
