Rhode Island Increases Risk Level Of West Nile Virus To High Amid More Positive Tests From Mosquitoes

Officials in Rhode Island have increased the risk level of West Nile virus to high following the state detecting the disease in the 2026 mosquito season.

Collected in Providence, North Providence and East Providence by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the virus was discovered July 20 in mosquito samples.

The Rhode Island State Health Laboratories tested the samples.

In the same collection of mosquito samples, there were no signs of any additional West Nile virus activity such as Jamestown Canyon virus or Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). (RELATED: Tornado Terrorizes Multiple Wisconsin Communities With Massive Trail Of Destruction)

The detection of West Nile virus doesn’t indicate a widespread outbreak across the state, however, the virus’ risk level is high.

It’s now being urged to residents by health officials to guard against bites from mosquitoes.

In the United States, West Nile virus is the top mosquito-borne disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Around 1 in 5 people who get infected with West Nile virus experience symptoms such as a rash, diarrhea, joint pain, headache, vomiting, fever and body aches.

In cases where the seriousness is heightened, the disease can impact the central nervous system and result in severe illness that can cause hospitalization or death.

Currently, there aren’t any vaccines for West Vile virus prevention, nor medications to provide treatment for the disease in humans.

It’s recommended by the CDC to use repellent for insects, wearing shirts that are long-sleeved and pants that fit loose, not go outdoors between dawn and dusk when mosquitoes hit peak activity, and utilize air conditioning or door and window screens to prevent mosquitoes from going indoors.
