Pete Buttigieg admitted on a podcast that the Biden administration’s decision to leave Elon Musk out of the 2021 electric vehicles summit (EV) was a mistake.

During an appearance on “The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett,” the former U.S. Secretary of Transportation under Biden was asked about the decision not to include Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk in the 2021 EV Summit: “That was a mistake; I was there for that.”
“He is, if not single-handedly responsible, certainly the person most responsible for EV excellence on American soil. And he’s saying, what the f**k?” Buttigieg said during his interview. “And I don’t blame him for that.”
Buttigieg explained the decision by saying, “This event was built to kind of celebrate the agreement that had been reached around tailpipe standards. And Tesla, because all they make are EVs, doesn’t even have tailpipes, and so people weren’t really thinking about inviting Tesla.”
Host of the podcast Steve Bartlett responded with skepticism as to the reasoning, noting that, “Elon publicly broke ranks with the Democrat Party. He bought Twitter and ultimately became Donald Trump’s largest donor and key surrogate.”

Democrat President Joe Biden hosted the EV Summit in 2021, bringing in representatives from the major automotive companies, including Ford and General Motors. CNN reported at the time that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union would be present at the event, possibly explaining Tesla’s absence. UAW had been trying, unsuccessfully, to unionize within the Tesla plant at the time.
During a press briefing, then White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, “Well, we of course welcome the efforts of automakers who recognize the potential of an electric vehicle future and support efforts that will help reach the President’s goal, and certainly Tesla is one of those companies.”
When pressed about the question of UAW membership, Psaki said, “Well, these are the three largest employers of the United Auto Workers, so I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.”
