Bill Maher told newcomers who refuse to adopt American values that accepting Western civilization is not up for debate.

The comedian delivered the argument Friday in the closing “New Rule” segment of his HBO show “Real Time.” Maher framed immigration as the country’s defining political fight and faulted both parties for going too far. He described his own stance as pro-immigration, saying the United States has long thrived by drawing talented people from abroad and turning them into Americans.

Newcomers can keep their food, their language at home, and their religious holidays, he said. What they cannot reject, in his telling, is the country’s foundational principles. “But you have to answer one question: Do you like Western civilization? He pointed to gay rights as one of those non-negotiable values. That reference tracked a real controversy in Washington state. Melissa Chaudhry, a progressive Democrat challenging longtime Rep. Adam Smith in the state’s 9th Congressional District, left LGBTQ rights off her campaign website to avoid alienating Muslim voters, according to Fox News. Asked about the omission during an interview with The Stranger, Chaudhry said, “because a lot of Muslims do not feel that way, unfortunately.” The Washington State Stonewall Democrats pushed to rescind her endorsements.

Maher also cited a cruise ship as proof that Muslim-majority nations enforce their own cultural limits. Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, chartered by Atlantis Events for a sailing out of Athens, was blocked from docking in Turkey over “moral standards,” then denied its replacement stop in Egypt, according to The Advocate. Turkish authorities said the charter group was known for conduct that clashed with the country’s values, CNN reported. The ship carried nearly 2,000 passengers.

“This has nothing to do with non-whites becoming the majority,” Maher said. He called the standards liberal values rather than white ones and aimed the same warning at Christian nationalists, backing democracy over theocracy.
