Royce Jones Moser, 18, faces a homicide count in the death of 18-year-old Karoline Jordyn Heintz, a first-year student and Vulcans soccer recruit at PennWest California, according to CBS News Pittsburgh. Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh confirmed the two were dating and said Moser was not enrolled at the school. His mother, Rachel Moser, was booked on charges of hindering apprehension, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse, conspiracy, and obstruction, according to CBS. Heintz’s relatives grew alarmed when she never returned to campus housing, so they used an Apple AirTag to trace her Jeep Cherokee to a lot near the California Public Library and dialed 911 shortly after midnight Thursday, WPXI reported. Police spotted blood on the vehicle and discovered her body wedged in the rear hatch.

Trooper Rocco Gagliardi laid out the sequence at a Thursday night briefing. The pair had met outside Moser’s father’s home in North Strabane Township to weigh whether their relationship could survive college, and the discussion soured, according to CBS. Moser walked inside, took a large kitchen knife, and stabbed Heintz in the chest, the trooper said. Court filings reviewed by WPXI state that Moser first told her, “Wait, I have something for you,” before retrieving the blade.

Moser then called his mother, who directed him to her Beallsville house, WPXI reported. She helped scrub the Jeep with disinfectant, handed him latex gloves, bagged the murder weapon in the outside trash, and washed his clothes, according to the criminal complaint cited by WPXI. Investigators recovered the knife while serving a search warrant.

Moser told troopers a “demon take over” ordered him to stab Heintz, and his mother repeated that account to police, according to CBS. Officials named no clear motive.

“I’m sorry,” Rachel Moser said as officers walked her out, according to WPXI. “My son took a life.”

Walsh called the killing a domestic matter and said the public faced no danger, according to Patch. Moser was set for arraignment before transfer to the Washington County jail, the Observer-Reporter reported.
