Several videos circulated widely on social media, and TMZ shared a clip that showed Knight standing with her back to the crowd during a performance of “Midnight Train to Georgia,” while batting off attempts to keep her on stage. The outlet reported that people working on her tour are calling the situation “tragic,” amid speculation that she’s being forced to perform.

Knight has been touring solo for some shows, and has shared the stage with Smokey Robinson for others in recent months. Online comments suggest that her July 25 Hollywood Bowl performance was the most concerning.

Sources close to the famous singer said her April Las Vegas tour was also deeply troubling, noting that she seemed to show signs of dementia. The source went on to tell TMZ it was “shameful” to keep trotting her across the stage at night in her condition.

“She should not be on anyone [sic] tour or stage let her relaxed and enjoy the rest of her life relaxing,” one fan wrote on X.

“Have some damn respect and take Ms Knight off the stage. That is so ridiculous! This is so sad to see her struggling and confused. Please stop this!!!,” another fan wrote.

Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, told TMZ the legendary singer has “good days and bad.”

“No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” he said.

McDowell asserted that Knight has not received an official dementia diagnosis, but will be seeing a doctor in the near future to determine if there’s reason for concern.

McDowell told TMZ he will monitor her September 5th performance to determine whether he will need to pull the plug on future shows that are currently slated through November. He revealed he’s building a facility close to their home in North Carolina so Knight can perform without the requirement for travel. Knight issued a statement to TMZ through McDowell, saying, “After much soul searching, I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward.”

Her statement continued, “I’ll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era.”

She added, “I’d like to take a moment, in advance, to thank all my fans over this last three quarters of a century for making a little girl’s dream come true and supporting her every step of the way.”
