The former first lady made the remark on the Aug. 26 episode of her “IMO” podcast, which she co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson. Stewart told her the daily work of parenting had given his life meaning and structure, then asked whether she missed it. “I’m good,” Obama replied.
Obama expanded on the point during the same exchange. “I don’t miss them. I don’t. I love them. I’m going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them,” she said. She noted that Barack Obama wept when their daughters departed for college, while she felt differently. “Now Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about, ‘Where are you? Elizabeth Barcohana, a California Republican Party delegate and mother, told Fox News Digital the remarks carried resentment rather than ordinary fatigue. “There is a difference between a mother expressing exhaustion from the demands of motherhood — which is real and relatable — and expressing resentment,” Barcohana said. She tied the reaction to public discussion around the Lindsay Clancy trial and said Obama appeared glad her daughters’ childhoods had concluded.
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh argued the family’s wealth had eased Obama’s parenting duties, yet she still seemed eager for her children to go. “Just a total raging narcissist,” Walsh said on X. Commentator Link Lauren accused her of using the podcast to air grievances from a life of privilege.
Obama defended her position by pointing to the years she had already devoted to her children. “I love my schedule. I have a great schedule, and it’s all mine,” she said. She contrasted mothers with fathers and said she knew her daughters thoroughly.
Sasha, 25, and Malia, 28, have both finished college. Malia entered Harvard in 2017 and now works as a screenwriter and director, while Sasha left for the University of Michigan in 2019 and later graduated from the University of Southern California. Barack Obama once likened dropping Malia at Harvard to “open-heart surgery,” according to OK! Magazine.
