EXCLUSIVE: New Poll Shows Majority Of Texans Oppose Flock Cameras
A majority of Texans oppose the local government’s use of automatic license plate readers (ALPRs), such as Flock cameras, according to a poll exclusively obtained by the Daily Caller.
In a new Overton Insights/Texas Public Policy Foundation poll, 63.6% of Texans somewhat oppose or strongly oppose Flock cameras in their neighborhood. Approximately 76.2% of those who voted for a Democrat in the Texas primary election oppose Flock cameras compared to the 54.7% of those who voted for a Republican and oppose. Texas liberals oppose the technology more than conservatives. Texans who identify as “very liberal” somewhat or strongly oppose Flock cameras 91.2% of the time. Of those who are “liberal,” 84.8% oppose in some way. Two-thirds of moderate Texans oppose. Conservatives oppose the cameras 49.7% of the time and 56.9% of those who consider themselves “very conservative” oppose.
The poll sampled 1,167 Texans over August 24-26 using peer-to-peer text invitations sent to a random sample of cell phone numbers matched to voter file data records. The margin of error is 2.9%.
A majority of Texans, regardless of whether they’ve lived in the state less than three years or born and raised in the state, opposed the cameras, the poll shows. Male and females in Texas oppose the cameras about the same with 62.6% of men saying they are against them and 64.6% of women saying the same.
The full poll from Overton Insights/Texas Public Policy Foundation will be released Wednesday.
As Flock cameras spark debate over whether they will be misused and invade on Americans’ privacy, President Donald Trump weighed in on the topic after a question from the Daily Caller.

The Caller asked the president Aug. 17 for his stance while in the Oval Office. Trump said he was studying the issue and would have a stance soon.
“It���s being studied right now,” Trump told the Caller. “You have pros and cons, right? It’s being studied right now.”
“We’ll have an answer as to our views on it over the next couple of weeks,” he added.
In Texas, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ordered all state agencies to pause funding for Flock cameras as debate rises. The order followed a report by the Texas Tribune showing that a state agency had given at least $30 million in grants to local police departments to install Flock cameras in the state.
“To the extent that cities get any funding for those cameras, most of it comes from the federal government,” Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris told the Tribune. “To the extent any funding comes from Texas agencies, those agencies are clarifying that those funds cannot be used for Flock cameras.”
