The 77-year-old singer opened up about his experience on Wednesday’s segment of SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel and told fans he had a shunt implanted in his brain.
He reassured fans that he’s on the mend after the frightening ordeal.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m still here,” he said.
Joel said leading up to his diagnosis, he noticed his “balance was not good,” and recalled that he had “this sense of being on a boat, like this rocking motion.”
“I wasn’t steady on my feet,” he said.
Joel told fans he saw a neurologist and was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in 2025. He explained that fluid was building up in his skull and putting pressure on his brain.
“Nobody’s really sure what causes it,” he said.

The famous singer said doctors told him that “it could be progressive, it could get worse,” and advised, “You implant a shunt in your brain.”
He asked what that involved, and doctors told him, “We drill a hole through your skull and we stick a shunt inside your brain.”

“It actually improved things,” Joel told his fans.
The singer revealed that playing on stage was detrimental to his health.
“The doctors told me this, because of my job, which is playing rock and roll music very loud, that it was giving me something like a concussion every time I did a show,” he said. (RELATED: Rick Springfield Drops Bombshell Admission About Taking A Man’s Life)

Joel continued, “It was causing damage to my brain nerves, and I could be losing more brain cells the more shows I did.”
The legendary performer has taken a step back from his career to focus on his health.
“I realized that means I shouldn’t be doing this right now. I got to improve,” he said.
“I’m doing whatever it is they tell me to do because I don’t want to lose it, you know?”
