Vivek Ramaswamy Deletes Baseball Video After Everyone And Their Mother Mocks His Swing

Ohio GOP gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy posted a campaign video showing off what is alleged to be a “baseball swing.” But the ensuing mockery from the social media peanut gallery was so bad that he was forced to delete it.

The video shows Ramaswamy in a batting cage, attempting to hit softballs pitched at speeds typically seen in 8-and-under Little League games. An eyewitness who watched the filming said Ramaswamy hit only five of the 25 pitches, according to a local Ohio news outlet. As I watched it, I couldn’t even process what he was saying about his campaign platform. I was only thinking of that portly ginger character from The Sandlot” and his most iconic line.

To borrow the words of the great Ham Porter, Vivek “plays ball like a girl.”

How many times have politicians tried to pander to the American public by playing sports, throwing a football, or, heaven forbid, going on an early morning pheasant hunt? How many times has each half-hearted attempt resulted in social media carnage? Hint: every single time.

A key focus of Ramaswamy’s campaign is to “Revive the American Dream in Ohio” and preserve the American way of life. A baseball-themed ad might not be a bad way to convey that message. Except if you want to feature yourself, you’d better make sure you are sufficiently athletic to prevent awkward, dorky moments, like this golf swing from Democrat Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Ramaswamy is apparently one hell of a tennis player. Maybe he could have leaned into that more than baseball. But maybe he should have just ditched the whole “sports” theme altogether.

At the end of the day, I think Americans enjoy sports because it’s basically detached from the realm of politics. Anytime you mix the two, well, you get stoned in the court of public opinion.

Americans also hate fake politicians as much as they love sports. Anytime a politician really comes across as fake—i.e., filming an ad in a batting cage even though it was the first time they ever held a baseball bat— it’s like they just jumped into a bathtub filled with great white sharks.
