Tropical Depression Fifteen-E Develops In Eastern Pacific As Norbert Weakens

Steering steadily across open waters, Tropical Storm Norbert is tracking west-northwest through the Eastern Pacific — a path it is projected to maintain for the next 48 hours.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) don’t expect Norbert to survive much longer, noting the storm should weaken into a post-tropical remnant low by Tuesday and fully dissipate by Wednesday. According to the latest update from the NHC, Norbert is located around 1,655 miles west of Baja California’s southern tip and 1,290 miles east of Hilo. Carrying weakened maximum sustained winds of 45 mph with higher gusts, the system is heading west-northwest at 14 mph.

Meanwhile, fresh activity is brewing. According to the NHC, Tropical Depression Fifteen-E has developed roughly 680 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.

Fifteen-E is clocking maximum sustained winds of 35 mph with higher gusts while tracking westward at around 10 mph. According to the NHC, the system is slated to accelerate slightly on a west to west-southwest trajectory over the next two days and should intensify into a tropical storm by early Monday.

Formerly Invest 97E, Tropical Depression 15-E was declared Sunday. If it develops into a tropical storm as expected, its name will be Odalys.

Computer models largely agree the newly formed system will face the same hostile environment that doomed Norbert. A heavy influx of dry air is expected to wrap into the core, shutting down the deep convection necessary to keep storms alive, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

“All reliable forecast models have the storm dissipating before it ever comes close to being in the vicinity of Hawaii,” said the forecast center.
