I bet my editors saw the title of this and thought, “Oh God.”

Let’s get into it.

THE N WORD JOKE

You might not follow comedy much, but in the last 10 years or so we’ve seen a resurgence of a few things. First, you’d probably be shocked to find out how many popular comedians are actually right-wing. I guess that’s what happens when you get people fired for telling jokes.

Another, in my opinion, much more noticeable trend is that the left is the subject of about 10x more ridicule than the right. And it’s actually funny! That’s the crucial part; it must be funny. If it’s just mocking the left but cringe at the same time, it doesn’t work.

The last emergent trend is just how common “crowd work” has become. Comedians generally used to disdain crowd work as lazy. You’re not really telling jokes, you’re just bantering with the audience in a funny way.

In an era of political poll switches and shifting Overton windows, it seems fitting that now even the most successful comedians routinely go viral not for telling jokes but for talking to their audience.

And what a perfect time, because the effects of the “Mind Virus,” as it’s now become known, are undoubtedly funny.

Enter … this guy. I don’t even know who he is. Frankly, it doesn’t matter. He’s talking to his audience about Lindsay Clancy and discovers he’s playing host to quite a few truthers. They think there’s no doubt Patrick played a role in the slaughter of his own children.

The funniest part is (and I encourage you to watch the clip) he asks the most vocal truther a simple question: “Would you still support her if they found out in court that she was shouting the N word the entire time?”

“Probably not,” the audience member says.

“Probably not, right?! Because killing kids is one thing, but that word is a big deal, right?!”

The entire audience is in tears at this point. And it’s also at this point that my faith in humanity is restored. Even the lady making the assertion knows it’s absolutely absurd.

Everyone joined in laughing at the logic-corroding effect of the Mind Virus value system. Shiloh Hendrix is given a jail sentence for saying the N-word, and 11 of 12 jurors wanted to acquit Lindsay Clancy for slaughtering her own children.

We’ll win, I’m convinced. The Mind Virus will not triumph. But in the meantime, it does help to just laugh. It’s good to know the normals are laughing with us.
