Republicans Getting Fed Up With Trump’s Iran Project, Poll Shows

More and more Republicans are souring on President Trump’s handling of the Iran War as the conflict drags on despite early administration promises that it would only last a couple of weeks, according to a new poll published Tuesday.

Democrats and independents have viewed the war negatively since it was launched in Feb., while soaring energy costs and high inflation have continued to squeeze Americans. Although 73 percent of Republicans approved of the way Trump was handling the war in March, that number has since dropped 13 points, according to a new CNN poll. Among Republicans or GOP-leaning adults under the age of 45, 53 percent disapprove of the president’s Iran project, the poll found. Fifty-four percent of Republicans who say they are not MAGA also disapprove.

As for the Trump administration’s general foreign policy agenda, Republicans are growing weary of the claim that it has helped America’s standing in the world. The poll found that around half of Republicans believe Trump’s foreign policy has helped the U.S. in global affairs, down 13 points from March.

The vast majority of Americans, three-quarters, believe Trump does not have a clear plan for handling the war. Seventy percent say the war has harmed U.S. interests and 76 percent say the war was not worth either the American lives lost or the financial burden. And a third of Americans now believe it is very likely the war will drag on for a long time.

The Congressional Budget Office earlier in Sept. that the first five months of the war have cost American taxpayers over $38 billion, even though the war was expected to cost between $2 billion and $3 billion per month. Meanwhile, diesel prices skyrocketed in Sept., with the U.S. national average retail price reaching a new all-time high of $6.51 a gallon on Monday.

Trump will deliver a speech to the United Nations on Tuesday and is expected to defend his decision to launch the war and argue that the U.S. is winning it.
