‘I Was Embarrassed By It’: Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Calls Abner Uribe’s Antics On Mound ‘Unacceptable’

Pat Murphy, the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, stated that his relief pitcher Abner Uribe’s antics on the mound following a strikeout to end the inning during a 6-0 win Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals were “unacceptable.”

In the eighth inning, with two outs on the board and runners placed on first and second base, Uribe sat down Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson on a strike three. The inning was the only one that Uribe pitched. Following the strikeout, Uribe then faced the St. Louis dugout and gave three crotch chops in their direction. The chops were similar to the ones done by WWE’s D-Generation X in the past.

The call was challenged by the Cardinals, and though things were close, it was confirmed that Uribe’s pitch location hit the strike zone at the very bottom.

“I don’t know what got over him. I mean, he’s been an emotional guy, but that kind of thing, that’s just not how we do things,” said Murphy. “I was embarrassed by it. Why are we doing it? It’s a 6-0 game. What are we doing there?”

“I love the kid. Believe me, I love the kid,” continued Murphy. “There’s so much good in this kid. He’s been so great for us in so many ways, but that’s unacceptable. So, whatever’s going on, you can’t tolerate that. For his teammates, and for everything, it’s not going to be tolerated, that’s all there is to it.”

Through an interpreter, Uribe issued an apology over the scene. However, he pointed a couple of fingers at St. Louis for being somewhat responsible.

“Everyone here knows me and knows who I am, and knows I have a bit of a history of being emotional out there,” said Uribe. “I think first I owe an apology to the Brewers. I owe an apology to my teammates, to my manager, all the bosses of the team. “But at the same time, I don’t think it’s unprofessional for their manager to be making signs towards our dugout saying that he’s going to be hitting guys,” said Uribe. “There was an event that occurred during the practice today, too, and I don’t think that was right. So, I have my teammates’ back always.”

Uribe didn’t elaborate on what exactly the event was. He claimed that Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol made gestures Tuesday that caused Uribe to believe he wanted Milwaukee batters hit intentionally.

Following the game, Marmol didn’t comment on the antics from Uribe.

“It looked like their team and Murph was handling it on their side,” said Marmol, per ESPN. “That’s their player. We’ll handle ours.”

At the time, Marmol wasn’t aware of the accusation from Uribe.
