Cristobal Liobardo Vasquez-Sanchez was arrested in Arlington, Virginia, on May 25 after allegedly inappropriately touching the victim, ABC7 News reported. Vasquez-Sanchez, 25, is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis confirmed to the outlet.

The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) released a statement on Thursday announcing his arrest in connection with the alleged May 22 incident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the female victim was in a parking garage stairwell when she encountered the suspect. Vasquez-Sanchez allegedly talked to her “before touching her inappropriately,” police said.

The victim escaped and “sought assistance from an uninvolved individual,” at which point the suspect allegedly fled the scene, the statement said. Police added that he was charged with sexual battery and attempted object sexual penetration.

7News, citing Bis, reported that Vasquez-Sanchez had previously been charged with “rape, sexual assault, property damage, drug possession and larceny.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) blamed his release on “sanctuary policies” in an X post Thursday evening.

“ICE lodged a detainer against Vasquez-Sanchez in April last year, but thanks to sanctuary policies, he was released him back into the community,” the post stated.

Vasquez-Sanchez has been detained without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility, police stated.

“ICE has issued yet another detainer against him,” the X post continued. (RELATED: Illegal Accused Of Murdering Chicago Student Reportedly Missing Part Of Skull, Can’t Read Or Write)

DHS also issued a statement on X.

“While Governor Spanberger continues to allow criminals like this to be released onto Virginia streets, DHS will continue risking their lives to arrest these heinous criminals,” the post said.

Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger ended cooperation agreements between ICE and state authorities in February.

Court documents indicate that Vasquez-Sanchez’s hearing is July 9. ACPD is requesting anyone with information or past interactions with the suspect to contact the department.

ACPD and ICE has not responded to the Daily Caller’s request for comment as of publication.
