Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy introduced legislation Monday to make President Donald Trump\u2019s border policies permanent, the Daily Caller learned.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Trump Secure Border Act would codify the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies on asylum and border security and is modeled after the border package House Republicans passed last Congress, according to bill text obtained by the Caller. Roy is also looking to couple these reforms with the Republicans\u2019 second attempt at a reconciliation bill to prevent Democrats from reversing Trump\u2019s policies in the future. \u201cPresident Trump\u2019s most successful border security policies remain vulnerable because Congress has failed to codify them into law,\u201d Roy told the Caller. \u201cIf we fail to act now, we risk returning to the chaos and crisis we saw under President Biden the next time Democrats take power.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHouse Republicans already passed the blueprint in H.R. 2 last Congress,\u201d Roy added. \u201cWe must pair these critical reforms with Reconciliation 2.0 and finally make border security permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republicans previously tried to pass H.R. 2 in the 11th Congress, also known as the Secure the Border Act of 2023. This was a large immigration and border security package that the House passed in May of 2023, which would have implemented numerous reforms like building more border wall and boosting resources to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This would have extended to other enforcement agencies within DHS like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The bill was dead on arrival in the Senate, which was controlled by Democrats at the time.<\/p>\n

Without the legislation, the very same Democrats that killed H.R. 2 are likely to reverse many, if not all, of Trump\u2019s policies that successfully shut down the border after he took office, Roy\u2019s office contends. Border crossings hit record lows for the first time in decades while hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens were deported and millions more self-deported.<\/p>\n
