WNBA player Brianna Turner is drawing criticism after arguing that the league should not wear commemorative \u201cUSA 250\u201d patches during All-Star festivities because of America\u2019s history of slavery and women\u2019s suffrage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turner, a Las Vegas Aces forward and Women\u2019s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) treasurer, \u201cbalked\u201d at the thought of WNBA players wearing \u201cUSA 250\u201d patches to recognize the nation\u2019s 250th anniversary, according to the New York Post.<\/p>\n

The patches were revealed in January as a partnership between Fanatics and President Donald Trump and are part of a broader America250 initiative that has already appeared across multiple professional sports leagues, including Super Bowl LX and the current NBA Finals, reported Sportico.<\/span><\/p>\n

The WNBA planned to include the patches on All-Star uniforms starting at their game in Chicago on July 25, despite not being included in the original January 30 announcement, according to Sportico. In a post on X, Turner argued that the WNBA celebrating America\u2019s 250th anniversary is ironic and that \u201cthe vast majority of people in America today would not have been \u2018free\u2019 250 years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the thread, Turner goes on to say that \u201c250 years ago we would have been breeders or in the fields working all day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The controversy quickly generated pushback from social media users who argued that America\u2019s past failures should not prevent Americans from celebrating the nation\u2019s achievements and progress.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former NCAA swimmer and women\u2019s sports advocate Riley Gaines was among those who responded to Turner\u2019s comments, writing, \u201cI don\u2019t bear responsibility for the actions of people who lived 160 years ago. Just no.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another conservative activist, Robby Starbuck, highlighted the broader historical realities of the era, questioning how women\u2019s rights compared elsewhere in the world 250 years ago and pointing to the persistence of modern-day slavery.<\/p>\n

America250 is a congressionally established nonprofit tasked with coordinating the nation\u2019s commemoration of the United States\u2019 founding in 1776. The league clarified in a statement made to USA Today that it is \u201cexploring how best to commemorate the country\u2019s 250th anniversary\u201d and that \u201cnothing has been finalized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
