Federal officials raided a Southern California GKN Aerospace facility Wednesday, investigating a toxic chemical leak that threatened an explosion and resulted in a massive evacuation last month.<\/p>\n

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) served the federal search warrant, a spokesperson from the FBI Los Angeles Field Office told the Daily Caller. The warrant authorized officials to seize any evidence of violation of a section of Title 42 that outlines a \u201cgeneral duty to prevent accidental release of extremely hazardous substance into the ambient air,\u201d according to the warrant obtained by the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n

The warrant, approved by a federal judge last Thursday, specifically authorized the seizure of documents or records related to the \u201ctreatment, storage, disposal, and transportation\u201d of methyl methacrylate, the toxic and flammable chemical contained in the leaking tank last month. Officials were cleared to seize \u201csamples of the substance within any tank, tote, drum, vat, vessel, or container suspected of containing or having previously contained methyl methacrylate and\/or any hazardous substance,\u201d according to the warrant viewed by the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n

The warrant also allowed officials to obtain records related to GKN\u2019s risk analyses and the safety and cooling equipment used with methyl methacrylate. It asked for documents referencing the supervisors responsible for handling and managing this chemical.<\/p>\n

The FBI Los Angeles Field Office said the investigation was ongoing but declined to provide further comment.<\/p>\n

Orange County firefighters rushed to a Garden Grove GKN Aerospace facility May 21 after a 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate began heating up and emitting vapors through its safety release valve, according to Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). OCFA called it \u201ca unique hazmat incident\u201d as the event unfolded.<\/p>\n

Authorities expressed fears about an explosion, and 50,000 residents were evacuated, according to the Associated Press (AP). A crack accidentally formed in the tank, relieving pressure and stopping a possible explosion. This allowed most residents to return home over Memorial Day weekend, the AP reported.<\/p>\n

GKN Aerospace, a global business based in the United Kingdom, makes parts for commercial and military aircraft. \u201cWe are cooperating with authorities at our Garden Grove facility and will continue to do so,\u201d GKN told the AP Wednesday when asked for comment about the FBI raid.<\/p>\n

Steve Carlin, GKN senior vice-president, thanked first responders and apologized to the community in a community meeting Tuesday, according to The Guardian.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of GKN and the Garden Grove plant, I want to say that I\u2019m sorry that this event and this incident occurred. I understand, and I realized sitting here tonight what a disruptive event it was and how unsettling it is to the greater community. Particularly unsettling to us at GKN because of the long history that we have with Garden Grove and how connected we are to this community,\u201d Carlin said, according to The Guardian.<\/p>\n

Residents and city leaders asked GKN to move the methyl methacrylate tanks at the meeting. Carlin responded by saying it was too early in the investigation for the company to act on that request.<\/p>\n

The Orange County District Attorney\u2019s (DA) Office has initiated a separate criminal investigation into the plant, DA spokesperson Kimberly Edds told AP.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have sent a preservation letter to GKN directing them not to modify or destroy any evidence, which the company\u2019s outside counsel confirmed receipt,\u201d Edds wrote in an email to the AP.<\/p>\n

Over 40 lawsuits have been filed against GKN since the incident, according to the Orange County Register. Residents have reported headaches, dizziness, intense odors and respiratory irritation.<\/p>\n
