Mike Lee Says No Rule Change Needed To Pass SAVE Act)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The discussion quickly escalated into a heated exchange between Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee, the bill\u2019s chief Senate sponsor, and several of his GOP colleagues. Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Thune both challenged Lee\u2019s push for the legislation, according to a source familiar with the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, that totally happened,\u201d a source familiar with the matter told the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the Majority Leader\u2019s office denies the admission. \u201cThis is a baseless claim, and it is unequivocally untrue,\u201d a spokesperson for Thune told the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<p>The confrontation was first reported by Punchbowl News reporter Andrew Desiderio, who wrote in a Wednesday X post, \u201cGOP senators went after Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) during the closed-door lunch meeting today over his push for the SAVE America Act, in what one source described as a \u2018pile-on.\u2019 Sens. Cornyn &amp; Kennedy challenged Lee about his strategy and complained that Trump is being led to believe it\u2019s possible for the Senate to pass it, leading to Republicans attacking each other &amp; Trump undermining his own agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee, who sponsored the SAVE America Act, has been one of the legislation\u2019s most vocal advocates. The Utah senator appeared on Fox News\u2019 The Ingraham Angle on Tuesday, where former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany asked whether there was a path forward for the election integrity bill.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_3 --> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, there is, Kayleigh, and I respectfully but very strongly disagree with my colleague from South Dakota on that,\u201d Lee replied.<\/p>\n<p>Lee noted that the legislation has already passed the House and has the support of a simple majority in the Senate. You just have to have 60 votes to force cloture, but you can break a filibuster through other means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee said his \u201cpreferred means\u201d for advancing the election integrity legislation would be to \u201cput the bill on the floor today,\u201d referring to the version that passed the House and already has majority support in the Senate. <strong>(RELATED: Lawmakers Won\u2019t Stop Singing Praises Of Fed\u2019s Favorite Warrantless Spying Tool)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cif the majority leader were to announce we are going to debate this till we pass it, we would get to the point of passage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune also appeared on Fox News\u2019 Special Report with host Bret Baier on Tuesday, who asked him about President Donald Trump\u2019s recent Truth Social post calling for the SAVE America Act to be attached to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), as Trump stated on a Sunday Truth Social post.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to Baier, Thune said, \u201cWe\u2019ve had the vote on the full version twice now so the full version is five components,\u201d before naming the bill\u2019s various provisions. <strong>(RELATED: Trump Turns Up Heat On John Thune, Demands Senate Leader Fire Parliamentarian)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Baier noted that \u201cthose five things are fairly practical in the Republican caucus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune pushed back, pointing to the legislation\u2019s lack of support in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe only got 48 votes; we had that vote last week on all five components.
