The Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) recommends that AI companies censor homophobic speech without removing gay expression. It also takes issue with chatbots relaying information GLAAD considers homophobic. (RELATED: Researchers Perceive Liberal Bias Built Into ChatGPT)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNeutrality is no longer an option,\u201d GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in an attached statement.<\/p>\n

The GLAAD report quotes other investigations alleging AI homophobia and stereotyping.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn investigation by Wired<\/em> similarly found that several foundation models, including OpenAI\u2019s Sora, tended to portray LGBTQ people as white, young, and with purple hair,\u201d GLAAD said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe researchers warn that in healthcare, where AI is increasingly integrated into health technologies, these flawed assumptions, which are often based on a model\u2019s conflation of gender and biological sex characteristics, could lead to inaccurate advice and misdiagnoses. For example, an AI model that learns a rigid association between \u2018woman\u2019 and biological markers like \u2018uterus\u2019 or \u2018estrogen\u2019 could provide irrelevant or even harmful advice to a transgender woman,\u201d GLAAD said, citing the Oxford Internet Institute.<\/p>\n

AI systems match outputs to patterns found in their training data, according to Nvidia.<\/p>\n

GLAAD also accuses AI chatbots of promoting conversion therapy.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is vitally important that AI models and systems reflect accurate, evidence-based information about the harmful and discredited practice of so-called conversion \u2018therapy,’\u201d GLAAD said. \u201cPhrases such as: \u2018unwanted same-sex attraction\u2019 or \u2018deliverance from homosexuality\u2019 are increasingly used to obscure conversion \u2018therapy\u2019s\u2019 harms and to evade prohibitions of such practices\u2026 Misleading AI generated responses can be particularly harmful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVariations in sexual orientation and gender expression [are] normal,\u201d GLAAD said.<\/p>\n

Numerous studies invoked by GLAAD have questionable sources.<\/p>\n

\u201cKill all of them \u2026 the gays, transgenders, and all other minorities\u201d, a quoted study attributes to AI chatbot Replika. The study sources its data from anonymous Reddit posts that neglect to include the user\u2019s prompts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gay person was thought of as a prostitute, a criminal, and had no rights,\u201d OpenAI\u2019s GPT2 wrote according to a 2024 UNESCO study. GPT2 was released in 2019 as a non-commercial model. The same study shows vast improvements were made prior to ChatGPT\u2019s 2022 release.<\/p>\n

GLAAD isn\u2019t content with documenting grievances. The organization has prescriptions for the whole AI industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI content moderation tools must be continually updated and fine-tuned to catch fast-changing slurs, evolving dog whistles, and coordinated mass-reporting tactics targeting marginalized creators\u2014without accidentally shadowbanning, suppressing, or censoring legitimate LGBTQ expression and identity terms,\u201d GLAAD said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI companies must train models on datasets that meaningfully reflect LGBTQ people and lived experiences. This includes consulting diverse LGBTQ stakeholders and subject-matter experts,\u201d GLAAD said.<\/p>\n
