The internet is awash with slop. Merriam-Webster <\/span>chose<\/span> \u201cslop\u201d as its 2025 Word of the Year, observing: \u201c<\/span>Like <\/span>slime<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>sludge<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>muck<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>slop<\/span><\/i> has the wet sound of something you don\u2019t want to touch. Enter: Taste Labs, an AI startup which came \u201cout of stealth\u201d Tuesday with $18.5 million in seed funding. Taste Labs\u2019 mission is ending \u201cAI slop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want a future where AI understands what feels right. What fits, what\u2019s beautiful, what feels like you, what is truly great,\u201d says Taste Labs founder Thais Castello Branco in her announcement video. \u201cToday, those decisions live inside human judgment. They\u2019re difficult to explain, difficult to measure, which is why it\u2019s been so hard for AI to become great at these subjective domains. We\u2019re building the foundation to measure, judge, codify, and search over what \u2018great\u2019 means in domains where there\u2019s not a clear right answer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Castello Branco has identified a problem, but I\u2019m doubtful that her startup will provide the solution to that problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

What is taste?<\/span><\/p>\n

Taste originates in the senses. In Vulgar Latin, \u201ctastare\u201d meant \u201cto touch or feel.\u201d That is to say, taste is rooted in individual perception. There are principles of design, but complete knowledge of those principles does not equate to \u201ctaste.\u201d Taste suggests personal discernment, as Castello Branco notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is beauty and there is ugliness, but \u201cgood taste\u201d does not necessarily refer to one\u2019s ability to distinguish the two. Taste is, at least in part, a social game. A person with \u201cgood taste\u201d adopts trends early, then drops them when they become pass\u00e9. An example: People with good taste know that visual art which is immediately, strikingly pleasant is actually bad art, and that the best art is broadly unappealing and accessible to only a few chosen viewers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mass production of a thing tends to devalue it. This is the basis of Rob Henderson\u2019s theory of \u201cluxury beliefs\u201c: Mass production destroyed the signaling value of luxury goods, so the elite and aspiring-elite turned to adopting expensive beliefs. The mass production of a thing does not automatically make it ugly, nor does scarcity automatically make something beautiful. If you live in an area with few cockroaches, you still wouldn\u2019t be delighted to see one in your kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Taste Labs initially succeeds in its quest to end AI slop, their newfound \u201ctaste\u201d will itself become slop. And so on.<\/span><\/p>\n
