The artificial intelligence company Anthropic is suing the Trump administration while its co-founder, Christopher Olah, is scheduled to speak at the Vatican on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n

A Washington, D.C., federal appeals court heard arguments from the Department of War (DOW) and Anthropic on Tuesday following the company\u2019s blacklisting by the DOW, which made its product no longer marketable to defense contractors, according to CNBC. Meanwhile, Olah is slated to be a speaker on AI at the release of Pope Leo XIV\u2019s first encyclical in late May, according to Vatican News.<\/p>\n

Anthropic, known for its AI model Claude, was designated a supply chain risk by the DOW \u2014 a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries who may threaten U.S. national security \u2014 after months of intense discussions between the two parties, CNBC reported. Anthropic did not want its tech used for fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance.<\/p>\n

The Pentagon continued to use Anthropic\u2019s AI for military operations during the Iran war, according to the outlet. A Pentagon official confirmed during a Senate subcommittee hearing in late March that the DOW was using Claude amid the Iran War, The Hill reported.<\/p>\n

The appeals court denied the startup\u2019s request to temporarily halt the designation in April but ultimately expedited the case, according to CNBC.<\/p>\n

The DOW argued that Anthropic\u2019s alleged ability to \u201cencode limitations into its model\u201d could create an \u201cuntenable national-security risk,\u201d .<\/p>\n

The Vatican announced Monday that the American-born pope will issue an encyclical, or guidance for Church bishops (the Magnifica humanitas), focused on \u201cpreserving the human person in the age of artificial intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guidance is scheduled to be released Monday, May 25, in accordance with a presentation event with the pope and other speakers at the Vatican, including Olah, according to Vatican News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe questions posed by AI are bigger than the AI community,\u201d Olah said on X. \u201cWe urgently need the world \u2014 religions, civil society, academics, governments \u2014 to participate in creating a positive outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is still unclear what Leo\u2019s first encyclical will say. However, he has been cautious about the use of AI in the past, saying that although models may be able to \u201cprocess information quickly,\u201d they \u201ccannot replace human intelligence,\u201d according to OSV News.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd don\u2019t ask it to do your homework for you,\u201d Leo told students. \u201cIt cannot offer real wisdom. It misses a very important human element: AI will not judge between what is truly right and wrong. And it won\u2019t stand in wonder, in authentic wonder before the beauty of God\u2019s creation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a Tuesday interview with Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Amber Duke, Eduard Habsburg-Lothringen, who served as the Hungarian ambassador to the Holy See for 10 years until 2025, said there have been many people, conferences and documents that have helped shape AI guidance in the Holy See.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good that a moral authority in the world, who does not have financial, economic or business interests, will speak about the dangers, but also the chances, of AI,\u201d Habsburg said. \u201cI would expect something extremely balanced, very well researched, very thoughtful and something very helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n
