{"id":2172,"date":"2026-06-22T18:36:40","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T18:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2172"},"modified":"2026-06-22T18:36:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T18:36:40","slug":"congregants-at-historic-slave-owning-church-do-everything-but-self-flagellate-in-white-guilt-pilgrimage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2172","title":{"rendered":"Congregants At Historic Slave-Owning Church Do Everything But Self-Flagellate In White Guilt Pilgrimage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_1 --> <\/p>\n<p>Congregants of a predominantly white Virginia church took part in a black-led \u201cslave trail\u201d walking tour through Richmond to confront their congregation\u2019s history of slave ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2170\">Former Wimbledon Champion Marketa Vondrousova Suspended Until 2030 For Refusing Doping Test<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An article from the Religion News Service (RNS) detailed the \u201chistorical and spiritual pilgrimage\u201d that took place June 13, interviewing members of St. Paul\u2019s Episcopal Church and a neighboring \u201cnonwhite majority\u201d congregation that participated in the event. <strong>(RELATED: Democrat Senator From One Of America\u2019s Whitest States Does African Dance For Juneteenth)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The church\u2019s website says that \u201cnearly all\u201d of the congregants at St. Paul\u2019s were enslavers, and that it had been attended by many leading Confederate figures.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry Gilbert, a co-chair of the pilgrimage, told RNS that members of St. Philip\u2019s Episcopal Church \u2014 a congregation founded by enslaved and freed blacks \u2014 were invited to join the tour because \u201cwhite privilege is very blind to seeing all of the aspects of a situation when race is involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The daylong retreat, called \u201cWalking With the Enslaved: The Church\u2019s Role in Slavery Pilgrimage,\u201d began with an introductory session at St. Philip\u2019s before approximately 20 participants set out to explore Richmond and the church\u2019s historical ties to slavery.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"770\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fstpaulsrva%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0NfvYf95u3o9dzdUyxhRtx4HHLsT2PBefmnVxDKeGq9j43WLtqdnw9Z1mjprQ6aZ5l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to RNS, participants silently marched in line, often holding onto one another, as they retraced the muddy path enslaved people would have walked in chains. A gospel singer was charged with performing African American spirituals to help build immersion during the roleplaying.<\/p>\n<p>The group then traveled from site to site as guides recounted stories from Richmond\u2019s slave-trading past to the white congregants.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_3 --> <\/p>\n<p>In a sermon the following day, Rev. Brent Melton compared the experience to the Stations of the Cross \u2014 a Christian devotional prayer that recounts the path Jesus took to Calvary while carrying His cross before His crucifixion.<\/p>\n<p>In his comparison, Melton said the pilgrimage included a simple liturgy, music and a gradually unfolding narrative. He described it as \u201ca God experience of movement with strangers\u201d and said participants were engaged in bringing \u201cGod\u2019s kingdom near.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2168\">Rubio Dispatched To Middle East Amid Ongoing Iran Talks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One stop took the group to Capitol Hill, where St. Paul\u2019s is located and where participants were told that many leaders of Virginia\u2019s slave trade were affiliated with Episcopal and Presbyterian churches.<\/p>\n<p>The group was later asked to consider how Christians had reconciled their faith with support for slavery before joining in a prayer asking God to \u201cenlighten the eyes of our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"250\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FEpiscopalDioceseofVirginia%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02rRu4VeVHe5qiXzN2WNjzGyoQK8DnJefQSfggWPsTCJjYupfLW2Da78HqzmLnCXqSl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The pilgrimage concluded at the Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground, built around the site of a former slave jail and now overshadowed by Interstate 95. One guide, Glyn Hughes, described the interstate\u2019s construction as \u201cinfrastructural violence\u201d and a reminder of continued harm against black Richmonders. Hughes said the project severed the historically black Jackson Ward neighborhood from Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in 1958.<\/p>\n<p>Melton\u2019s wife, Monica, told RNS that a moment of silence at the burial ground led her to reflect on a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that race could not be used as the basis for drawing congressional maps in Louisiana. She said the decision left her concerned about the political power of black voters and asking herself, \u201cWhere is my voice?
