Englishtown, New Jersey, councilman and former mafia hitman John Alite is being accused of threatening to hit a man with a baseball bat, following his arrest last Friday on charges of loan sharking and extortion.<\/p>\n

Alite, a former hitman for the Gambino crime family, has been \u201ccharged with multiple counts of theft by extortion (second degree), corporate misconduct (second degree), usury (second degree), and terroristic threats,\u201d according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General\u2019s Office. CBS News reported in 2015 that Alite killed as many as 15 people. \u201cHe also says he shot 30 to 40 people and beat more than one hundred others with pipes and baseball bats,\u201d CBS News reported at the time. Stephen Locrotondo, 67, of Bridgewater, New Jersey, was also arrested for usury and conspiracy alongside Alite.<\/p>\n

Alite \u201cspecifically threatened to take a baseball bat to the head of one person,\u201d NJ.com reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Alite was accused of granting loans with rates exceeding 50 percent annually before shaking victims down for money and property by threatening them with violence, according to court documents,\u201d the New York Times reported. \u201cMr. Alite used his company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, to promote the scheme and made at least $75,000, prosecutors said.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Times, a search of Alite\u2019s house found multiple weapons, including \u201ctwo slapjacks, metal knuckles, an expandable baton, six baseball bats and approximately two dozen switchblade knives and other types of knives.\u201d Citing police reports, NJ.com noted that the weapons are important to the case because Alite \u201cthreatened to hit an individual with a baseball bat across his head, and indicated that he has \u2018gut\u2019 people like \u2018fish,\u2019 amongst other threats,\u201d in the course of collecting loan debts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese arrests are the result of rigorous investigative work and the strong cooperation between the Division of Criminal Justice and New Jersey State Police, who work tirelessly every day in the pursuit of justice,\u201d said Attorney General Jennifer Davenport in an official statement. \u201cOur office is dedicated to ensuring that all businesses conduct themselves fairly and lawfully. The conduct alleged in this case was anything but, and we will work to hold those who cheat and steal accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n
