Ex-MSNBC host Joy Reid recently claimed Juneteenth is the \u201creal\u201d independence holiday in America, asserting black people aren\u2019t excited about July 4th.<\/p>

Reid \u2014 who launched a YouTube show after she was fired as a TV host in early 2025 \u2014 delivered an account of Juneteenth, America\u2019s \u2018dark history,\u2019 and Trump\u2019s \u2018demonic\u2019 presidency during a Friday interview on the federal holiday. (RELATED: Doctor Frita Tells Joy Reid That Michelle Obama Jokes Could Cause Heart Disease)<\/strong><\/p>

\u201cNobody black I know is really excited about the 4th of July,\u201d Reid said. \u201cIt is the celebration of slaveholders who freed themselves from having to pay taxes to the Crown for their slave empire. And that is what it is.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cIf we\u2019re just being perfectly honest, whether you read \u2018The 1619 Project\u2019 or not, you just have to understand that for black people \u2014 particularly for African-Americans \u2014 there\u2019s a duality to the Fourth of July that is hard to reconcile if you think about it too much,\u201d Reid continued.<\/p>

\u201cJuneteenth to me is the real thing that Fourth of July is, because we really were not a democracy until we ended slavery,\u201d Reid claimed. \u201c[It\u2019s] the perfect crystallization of the reality of America.\u201d<\/p>

Speaking for all black Americans, Reid complained that \u201cit\u2019s hard to recognize anything but Juneteenth as Independence Day.\u201d<\/p>

Reid\u2019s interviewer, a woman identified as \u201cAlex,\u201d argued that Juneteenth is the \u201cantidote\u201d to the \u201cpatriotism\u201d exhibited by the July 4th celebrations organized on the National Mall. \u201cJuneteenth is actually the answer for what has been really twisting me into knots, which is like, <\/span>what does patriotism look like? And what is the antidote? Like everybody\u2019s like, you know, \u2018f\u2014 the Fourth of July celebrations and the UFC fights and the Indie drag races and the MAGA rally. That\u2019s not us. That\u2019s not our country.’\u201d<\/p>

\u201cDonald Trump <\/span>represents the majority of American history. He is our just dessert,\u201d Reid said, referring to what she described as the \u201cimperialism, war-mongering, [and] theft\u201d of the president.<\/p>

\u201cTrump is the ugly underbelly and reality of what we\u2019ve been,\u201d Reid added. \u201cThere\u2019s still a demon inside of us. And he represents that. And it\u2019s like we almost needed Trump to exist so we have to face the demon. [\u2026] He\u2019s being the demon.\u201d<\/p>
