The downing of the F-15 fighter jet, which carried the pilot and a weapons system officer, in early April marked the first time a U.S. combat plane was shot down over Iran since the war began. The rescued pilot told intelligence officials during a debrief that he saw what appeared to be a formation of drones all moving in unison, CNN reported. \u201cMultiple drones interconnected and moving as one with smaller drones below the bigger drones like legs,\u201d a source familiar with the pilot\u2019s account said, according to CNN. \u201cReal alien shit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another source told the outlet that the pilot described a \u201cminefield of drones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Intelligence officials are torn over whether the pilot\u2019s account is fully true, CNN reported. The pilot suffered a concussion during the crash and was also the same pilot who had been accidentally shot down in a friendly-fire incident with the Kuwaiti forces earlier in the war, according to CNN\u2019s sources. It is also unclear whether the weapons system officer saw anything similar to the pilot\u2019s description.<\/p>\n

If it is true, the pilot was describing what is known as \u201cone-to-many meshed networking,\u201d which allows an operator to control multiple drones in a single formation, CNN reported. Russia and China are believed to have the technology, and any sophisticated drone technology deployed by Iran would be a cause for concern for the U.S. and its Gulf Allies, the outlet noted.<\/p>\n

China has become famous for its synchronized drone light shows. In March, a Chinese technology company set the world record for the most drones airborne simultaneously from a single computer, according to the Guinness World Records. The company flew 22,580 drones outdoors in sophisticated designs and patterns.<\/p>\n

Asymmetric drone warfare has played a major role in the Iran War. The Iranians used cheap drones to wreak havoc on Gulf States and maintain their control over the Strait of Hormuz. A U.S. Army Apache helicopter was reportedly struck by a drone over the Strait earlier in June.<\/p>\n
