Thirteen House Democrats and candidates portraying themselves as moderate centrists released a pledge Thursday promising to push back against ascendant socialists who recently won big in primaries.<\/p>\n

Tuesday night saw a massive blow to the Democratic establishment, as three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America \u2014 Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez \u2014 sailed through their primaries. U.S.-Israel relations were a main focus of each campaign, with all three candidates taking a strong stance against the Israeli state while calling for the end of U.S. aid and weapons shipments. In the aftermath, a group of Democrats led by Democratic Reps. Tom Suozzi of New York and Adam Gray of California released the \u201cPromise to America\u201d pledge, which outlines what a more centrist-oriented party might look like.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is stronger than our politics. Politics forces false choices between extremes on right and left. We reject them,\u201d the website states. \u201cToo many Americans have not benefited from the last half-century of economic growth. Americans want an economy that lowers costs, expands opportunity, and rewards the people who work hard every day. Americans want safe communities and institutions that solve problems. We believe in building more to lower costs and expand opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It continues: \u201cWe believe Democrats succeed when we speak to the whole country and value persuasion over purity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other signatories include Democratic Reps. Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan, Susie Lee of Nevada, Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Laura Gillen of New York, Don Davis of North Carolina, Janelle Bynum of Oregon and Vicente Gonzalez of Texas. Democratic candidates Marlene Galan-Woods of Arizona, Jessica Killin of Colorado, Jamie Ager and Paul Barringer of North Carolina and Bobby Pulido of Texas signed the petition as well.<\/p>\n

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer tried to downplay the DSA\u2019s victories, arguing Wednesday that the electorate in a state like Virginia differs from that in deeply blue New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re seeing centrist energy in Virginia, Iowa, and New Jersey, progressive energy in New York City,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to harness it all to win in November. Because all Democrats are united in the mission of taking back the Senate and defeating Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Democratic Party\u2019s overall approval rating has remained low throughout President Donald Trump\u2019s second term. The RealClearPolitics poll average between March 12 and June 8 found that 36.5% view the party favorably.<\/p>\n
