Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito warned Monday that the Court\u2019s ruling on mail-in ballots opens the floodgates for potential voter fraud opportunities.<\/p>\n

In a 5-4 \u00a0authored by Trump-appointed Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that federal law allows states to continue counting non-military mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day. Alito wrote in his dissenting opinion that the decision \u201cleaves open opportunities for <\/span>voter fraud that may further undermine Americans\u2019 faith <\/span>in the integrity of this country\u2019s elections.\u201d (RELATED: <\/strong><\/span>These 14 States Allow Mail-In Ballots To Count Even After Election Day \u2014 For Now)<\/strong>
<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDiverse sources <\/span>have recognized that mail-in ballots increase the potential <\/span>for fraud,\u201d Alito added. \u201cIn 2005, a committee chaired by former President <\/span>Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker <\/span>found that absentee voting was \u2018the largest source of poten<\/span>tial voter fraud\u2019 in American elections.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The conservative justice also referred to a case from 2008 in which the late Justice John Paul Stevens \u201crecognized that the risk of voter fraud \u2018perpetrated using absentee ballots\u2019 is \u2018real\u2019 and \u2018could affect the outcome of a close election.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Alito wrote further that the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling opens up \u201cPan<\/span>dora\u2019s box.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGiven that <\/span>fact, is a voter\u2019s \u2018selection\u2019 truly \u2018final\u2019 when he or she puts <\/span>a ballot in the mailbox?\u201d his dissent continued. \u201cThe majority dodges this question, o<\/span>ffering the passing suggestion that Mississippi\u2019s statute <\/span>would be preempted only insofar as it allows voters to recall <\/span>their ballots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMay the Fifth Circuit hold as much on remand? Must state law expressly prohibit voters <\/span>from using recall services? Multiple members of Congress blasted the ruling \u2014 which law professor Jonathan Turley had called a \u201csurprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republican Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt wrote Monday in a statement posted to X that the Court\u2019s opinion was \u201cA shockingly wrong\u201d one. Meanwhile, Republican Arizona Rep. Abe Hamadeh similarly blasted the decision as \u201cdisastrous\u201d in an X post.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember Election Day?\u201d Hamadeh wrote in the social media post. \u201c<\/span>This disastrous SCOTUS decision, authored by Justice Barrett, guarantees we\u2019ll keep drifting away from it \u2014 as our sacred elections get bogged down by endless mail-in ballots and never-ending counts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
