Gov. Jay Collins filed a legal challenge Monday over fellow Republican gubernatorial candidate James Fishback\u2019s eligibility to run for office in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2568\">Inmates Seize Control Of North Carolina Jail, Take Officers Hostage<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Florida law requires that gubernatorial candidates live in the state for at least seven years preceding their run for governor, so all Florida candidates running for governor on Nov. 3, 2026, should have been living in the state at least by Nov. 3, 2019. But according to Collins\u2019 complaint, Fishback registered to vote in Washington, D.C., in 2020. In 2021, Fishback allegedly purchased a condominium in D.C. and executed a deed of trust, claiming it as his primary residence. Then Fishback allegedly received a DC Homestead Deduction through the 2026 tax year. <strong>(RELATED: Trump-Backed Julia Letlow Defeats Freedom Caucus Co-Founder In Race To Succeed Pro-Impeachment GOP LA Sen Bill Cassidy)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to receive a DC Homestead Deduction, the homeowner must submit an application claiming their DC home as their principal residence. In April 2026, the DC Office of Tax and Revenue allegedly issued Fishback a \u201cCorrected Property Tax Bill,\u201d removing the Homestead Deduction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t afford to play games with Florida\u2019s Constitution that would end up handing the Governor\u2019s Mansion to Democrat David Jolly on August 19,\u201d Collins said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p> <!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<p>Collins is running for governor against Fishback, and both are running against Trump-endorsed Byron Donalds to replace Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2566\">Senate Ethics Panel Tosses Out Complaint Against Eric Swalwell\u2019s Buddy Ruben Gallego<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fishback has received criticism for his repeated comments about Donalds\u2019 race, calling him a \u201ctoken black\u201d in Congress, a \u201cslave to donors,\u201d and claiming that he wants to turn Florida into a \u201cSection 8 ghetto.\u201d In addition, Fishback has made calls to \u201cburn down\u201d the GOP establishment.
