Nobel laureate and economist Paul Krugman suggested during a recent interview that certain tariffs on Chinese vehicles may now be a necessity.<\/p>\n

Krugman said Saturday during an\u00a0interview with Bloomberg Television that he thinks having some \u201cconditional tariffs\u201d on Chinese cars are \u201cprobably going to be necessary.\u201d (RELATED: Supreme Court Shoots Down Trump\u2019s Tariffs)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that the Europeans can allow their auto industry to be totally hollowed out,\u201d Krugman said.<\/p>\n

Still, Krugman also noted that he believes completely \u201cshutting out\u201d Chinese vehicles from the market would be a \u201cbad thing\u201d and also \u201cvery costly to consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cBut on the other hand, I have been shocked, not only by my own change of mind, but by \u2026 some of my colleagues,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople who are longtime advocates of globalization and free trade, who are saying, \u2018okay Europe needs to do [something]\u2019 \u2026 really if you like, it\u2019s national security, it\u2019s market disruption, to just allow something as big as the European auto industry to just be overrun, even if consumers would benefit for a while, it\u2019s not 20 years ago anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krugman also stated that his stance on tariffs is \u201ca long way from saying that we should have tariffs on everything or that Europeans should have tariffs on everything.\u201d He added that a \u201cmuch more interventionist position\u201d has now become much more difficult to avoid.<\/p>\n

Krugman has previously been an outspoken critic of sweeping tariffs, calling President Donald Trump\u2019s threat to implement higher tariffs on Brazil \u201cgrotesquely illegal\u201d in July 2025, NPR reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In September 2025, Krugman blasted the Trump administration\u2019s tariff strategy as \u201ccomplete, utter chaos,\u201d Yahoo Finance reported. <\/span>Krugman also claimed in a Feb 24, 2026 Substack post that Trump \u201chas the economics of trade deficits fundamentally wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached a \u201ctrade and economic deal\u201d in November 2025 which in part states that the U.S. will \u201clower the tariffs on Chinese imports imposed to curb fentanyl flows by removing 10 percentage points of the cumulative rate, effective November 10, 2025, and will maintain its suspension of heightened reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports until November 10, 2026,\u201d according to a White House fact sheet.<\/span><\/p>\n

The White House said in a February 2025 fact sheet that the U.S. imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China is part of a broader effort to hold the countries \u201caccountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, carmakers in China have been vastly outperforming U.S., European and Japanese companies in electric vehicles, battery innovation, design and software, BBC News reported in May.<\/span><\/p>\n
