A prominent agriculture lobbyist warned President Donald Trump that that taking action to promote pesticide alternatives would cause him to lose support among farming interests,<\/span> Axios first reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The purported confrontation suggests that supporters of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement who hope to crack down on conventional pesticides are at odds with the farm lobby\u2019s quest to safeguard them, according to the outlet. Trump, Kennedy, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins and American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall held a Thursday meeting in the Oval Office to talk about an executive order on pesticides that the president was set to sign later in the day, Axios reported. Some of Kennedy\u2019s staff who attended the meeting were upset about the U.S. Supreme Court siding with the maker of Roundup earlier on Thursday, leading to rising tension among the MAHA movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The HHS Secretary told Trump that the court\u2019s decision was a massive setback for supporters of his health-oriented movement, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

Kennedy also claimed that the order, which aims to promote alternatives to conventional pesticides in the food supply and expand research into their effects, could potentially help counter the ruling\u2019s impacts, Axios reported, citing three anonymous sources familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Lundgren, a South Dakota farmer and former USDA official also asked the president to sign the executive order during the meeting, alleging that pesticide usage negatively impacts farmers\u2019 health.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the take-home messages I really wanted [Trump] to understand is that the farmers were sick right now,\u201d Lundgren told Axios. \u201cWe\u2019re literally killing our farmers with these food systems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During the meeting, multiple other farmers similarly voiced support for Lundgren\u2019s backing of regenerative agriculture, the outlet reported. R<\/span>egenerative agriculture refers to the process of renewing degraded soils using certain management practices such as no or limited usage of pesticides and synthetic fertilizer, according to Noble Research Institute.<\/span>

Meanwhile, Duvall urged Trump not to sign the order, claiming it could cause him to lose the backing of farming interests, according to Axios. Lundgren told Axios that Duvall confronting Trump was \u201cshocking,\u201d and that the president seemed visibly concerned and \u201cwanted to understand why Zippy was so worried.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Duvall and White House Senior Advisor Calley Means later clashed during the meeting, with Means telling Duvall it was obvious that he had not actually read the executive order, Axios reported, citing three anonymous sources familiar with the situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was intense in there,\u201d Lundgren told Axios. \u201cThey were arguing. It was back and forth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rollins, who has publicly defended glyphosate and other conventional pesticides, called for Trump to sign the order, Axios reported. Trump signed the order after receiving additional feedback, and Duvall later said he would support the move. Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the U.S. but its critics allege that it can cause certain cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n

HHS did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t comment on private meetings with the President, on or off the record,\u201d a USDA spokesman told the DCNF. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that others do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump listens to a variety of opinions from many subject experts to inform his decision-making,\u201d White House spokesman Kush Desai told the DCNF. \u201cThe President is committed to ultimately doing what\u2019s best for the MAHA movement, our farmers, and the American people \u2013 and the signing of this executive order reflects that commitment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

An AFBF spokesperson told the DCNF in a statement that while Duvall did \u201cexpress concern\u201d about Trump\u2019s executive order, it was unrelated \u201cto its stated purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe account of what Mr. Duvall said in the meeting and specifically to the president is not accurate,\u201d the AFBF spokesperson said. \u201cHe did express concern about the EO but not related to its stated purpose. Farm Bureau supports research and innovation, which are key to advancing agriculture, and we support regenerative agriculture. We\u2019ve been part of many conversations about how to responsibly encourage such practices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201c<\/span>Mr. Duvall\u2019s concern related to the insinuation that our food supply is not safe, and he warned against undermining confidence in the food system and confidence in EPA\u2019s rigorous oversight that farmers rely on every day,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cHe stressed that it\u2019s important for farmers to have a seat at the table.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump wrote in a Thursday executive order dubbed \u201cAdvancing <\/span>Regenerative Agriculture and Strengthening American Farm Resilience\u201d that it is the U.S.\u2019 policy to \u201c<\/span>promote continued advances in precision agriculture technologies\u201d and \u201csignificantly increase Federal investment in regenerative agriculture practices, research, and education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Axios\u2019 report comes after Trump <\/span>signed<\/span> a separate executive order in February in an effort to broaden the domestic production of glyphosate, drawing <\/span>intense<\/span> backlash<\/span> from the MAHA movement. The order states that a \u201clack of access to glyphosate-based herbicides would critically jeopardize agricultural productivity, adding pressure to the domestic food system, and may result in a transition of cropland to other uses due to low productivity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
