The Center, which opened July 4, 2003, is a private nonprofit which \u201cserves as America\u2019s leading platform for nonpartisan constitutional education and debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would just like to recall the words signed by the founding fathers of the nation 250 years ago in Philadelphia, in the Declaration of Independence, when they said that, \u2018We hold these truths to be self-evident,\u2019 that all men have received fundamental rights from our Creator,\u201d the Holy Father said. \u201cAnd they include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UR8VIQqD0Rs?si=vZw8jVedUk3XBnv7;%20time=2955\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay those values continue to inspire all of us, in the United States and throughout the world, and together, hopefully, we can all work that those freedoms will indeed be a part of the lives of all people everywhere,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Previous <u>recipients<\/u> of the medal include former Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush, in addition to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Anthony Kennedy, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Arizona Senator John McCain, Alabama Rep. John Lewis, Olympic gold medalist and boxing legend Muhammad Ali, and imprisoned Catholic pro-democracy activist and media mogul Jimmy Lai.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_3 --> <\/p>\n<p>The Friday ceremony, originally scheduled to take place in the shadow of Philadelphia\u2019s historic Independence Hall where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed, was moved inside the National Constitution Center due to extreme heat. Other participants in the ceremony included Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia Nelson P\u00e9rez, and other interfaith leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the attendees from the Vatican, Leo began his 10-minute acceptance speech identifying both as an American and with the ideas and principles from the Declaration of Independence that launched the fledgling nation on its course through history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a son of this great country, founded by courageous men and women who dreamed of liberty and of a better life for themselves and for their children, I join you in asking God\u2019s blessings upon America\u2019s future, that the lofty ideals enshrined at the beginning of the Declaration of Independence may continue to guide the flourishing of the nation in unity, justice and peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs every American knows, however, the path to building a society that would embody those high ideals of liberty and justice for all was not always easy and, in many respects, is still a work in progress,\u201d the pope continued. \u201cIndeed, the effort to realize this vision is one that must be taken up anew in each generation and in the face of ever new challenges. The pope, the global shepherd of an\u00a0estimated 1.4 billion Catholics, is notably spending July 4 at the Italian island of Lampedusa \u2014 a major entry point for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea \u2014 to honor shipwreck victims and advocate immigration policies recognizing human dignity.<\/p>\n<p>He also recognized that building a society which embodies the \u201chigh ideals of liberty and justice for all\u201d was difficult \u2014 even requiring bravery \u2014 and \u201ca work in progress\u201d which must be \u201ctaken up anew in each generation and in the face of ever new challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the first right enshrined by the Founders, Leo observed that \u201cno one who is deprived of life can enjoy liberty or pursue happiness. A country\u2019s vitality is deeply tied to the value it affords to human life in every form and condition, acknowledging the dignity endowed upon every human person by virtue of their very existence.\u201d He went on to reaffirm the need for laws which \u201crecognize and safeguard this gift from the moment of conception to natural death.\u201d In doing so, reverence for each human person would set apart any nation seeking greatness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this regard, the moral greatness of a nation is manifested, above all, in its capacity to support, protect and cherish the lives of all, especially the most vulnerable and those whose worth is questioned,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=2892\">Radical Socialists Have Taken A Play Straight From Trump Campaign\u2019s Playbook<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turning to liberty, the pope observed that authentic freedom is, rather than a base desire to do anything, \u201cfounded upon the human person\u2019s capacity to know the truth and adhere to what is good, even at great cost \u2014 a sacrifice well known to many who have labored to shape this country.\u201d Such desires, in turn, inspire one\u2019s search for \u2014 and the orientation of life towards \u2014 purpose, the meaning of life, and even God. <strong>(RELATED: Catholic Church Excommunicates Breakaway Traditionalist Bishops And Their Followers)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, Leo praised how the American tradition of religious liberty facilitates \u201cinterfaith dialogue and interreligious cooperation in promoting the public good and enriching the debates on the great moral and ethical issues that have faced the nation and shaped the course of its history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then expressed a hope for such common ground to bring about peace and reconciliation around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S., characterized by the nobility of heart and generosity of its people, thereby offers a model of being \u201cunited not by goals bound to momentary endeavors, but by ideals that do not fade with the passing of time.\u201d The founding principles, the pope observed, give strength and guidance to pursue a better future.<\/p>\n<p>The award follows a perceived tension between the Holy See and the administration of President Donald Trump and its political priorities. Following perceived opposition to his approach to denying Iran its ambitions for a nuclear weapon, Trump lambasted the pope as \u201cWEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy [<em>sic<\/em>]\u201d during an April 12 tirade on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>Leo responded the following day, appearing to dismiss media narratives of a rift between the two Americans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe things that I say are certainly not meant as attacks on anyone, and the message of the Gospel is very clear: \u2018Blessed are the peacemakers,&#8217;\u201d Leo said. \u201cI have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do, what the Church is here to do. We are not politicians, we don\u2019t deal with foreign policy with the same perspective he might understand it, but I do believe in the message of the Gospel, as a peacemaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pope has since continued a dialogue with the Trump administration, warmly welcoming Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the Vatican for a May 7 meeting. It is unclear when in the future Leo may schedule a visit to his home country.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, meanwhile, released on Friday a June 25  from His Holiness to the American people echoing the celebratory sentiments of his Liberty Medal remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations on this extraordinary national anniversary,\u201d the pope\u2019s letter ends. \u201cMay the spirit of 1776 continue to inspire hope and unity as the United States of America moves into the future.
