The European Union\u2019s General Safety Regulation mandated Advanced Driver Distraction Warning (ADDW) systems that track drivers\u2019 body movements, such as eye and head movements, in every new vehicle sold after July 7, according to Access Newswire.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a driver support system,\u201d Martin Krantz, CEO and Founder of Swedish AI company Smart Eye, told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview. \u201cIt\u2019s a life-saving technology. It really helps to prevent accidents. It\u2019s probably gonna be just like with the seat belt and the airbag.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smart Eye is one of the leading suppliers of eye-tracking and driver monitoring AI that is compliant with ADDW systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tracking [has] quite a high accuracy \u2026 So if you sit in your car and you\u2019re driving your car, and then you look at the speedometer, then what happens is that the tracking realizes that this is the speedometer that you\u2019re looking at,\u201d the CEO added. \u201cAnd then you\u2019re allowed to take your eyes away from the road for a certain time period. Let\u2019s say, for example, two seconds \u2026 You have a time \u2026 that you can spend on different objects [in your car].\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Cell phone use while driving is \u201ca forbidden thing to do in most jurisdictions,\u201d Krantz explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen it can warn immediately, \u2018keep your eyes on the road,\u2019 because it\u2019s actually illegal to do that,\u201d he told the DCNF. \u201cAnd then if you, for example, spend time on the navigation display or on the radio, that\u2019s also allowed, but not for too long \u2026 eventually it will tell you to move back your attention [sic] to the road. You have different distraction limits depending on the speed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one\u2019s going to call the authorities, and no one\u2019s going to tell on you and send along [sic] to the police or anything like that \u2026 but it\u2019s going to be different for different car makers,\u201d Krantz added.<\/p>\n
