CalMatters, a non-profit investigative outlet, reported that university police in California\u2019s higher education institutions have amassed scores of weapons and reserves of ammunition. The mass inventory from 2025 records includes hundreds of AR-15s, thousands of munitions laced with the same chemical found in chili peppers, drones, stun grenades, and even a submachine gun, according to the outlet. Under current federal law, the Department of Defense is allowed to transfer extra arms and ammunition to federal and state agencies for law enforcement purposes, sometimes at no cost. This means university police can stockpile weapons previously reserved for members of the armed forces.<\/p>
