President Donald Trump traced his friendship with the late Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham back to a single moment: crushing him in his own home state in 2016.<\/p>\n

Trump phoned into NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d on Sunday, just hours after Graham died from a \u201cbrief and sudden illness,\u201d according to CBS News. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu replaced Graham, who was scheduled to go on the program Sunday morning, The Hill reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got to know Lindsey during the campaign. I didn\u2019t really know him then,\u201d Trump said. \u201cHe was tough, but he said, \u2018I\u2019ll see you in South Carolina\u2019 \u2026 But when it came to South Carolina, I won South Carolina by a lot, and I sort of ran the table on everybody, and it was good. \u2026 He respected it, and we sort of got a little bit friendly, and just the friendship grew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump and Graham were fierce opponents early in the 2016 Republican primary, Politico reported. Trump read Graham\u2019s personal cellphone number aloud at a July 2015 campaign rally in South Carolina after the senator called him a \u201cjackass.\u201d (RELATED: Lindsey Graham Dead At 71)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump mocked Graham\u2019s intelligence at the same event, saying he didn\u2019t seem \u201clike a very bright guy,\u201d according to Politico.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was an amazing advocate. I don\u2019t know how you find anybody like him. He was so intent,\u201d Trump said on \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d \u201cI mean, he literally called me about the Save America Act \u2026 Think of it: He\u2019s traveling for many, many hours. That\u2019s a long flight \u2026 And he, you know, calls me about the Save America Act. He thought we were going to get it passed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham called the president Saturday evening about the SAVE America Act after he returned from a trip to Ukraine, according to The Hill.<\/p>\n
