Minnesota officials granted a pardon to an illegal child rapist in part because he was \u201cfacing deportation,\u201d according to a Fox News report.<\/p>\n

Laotian national Tou Lue Vang received a pardon in June from Democrat Governor Tim Walz and pardon officials for his repeated rape of a 10-year-old girl after the criminal stressed his fear of deportation in his pardon application, Fox News reported.<\/p>\n

Vang was subsequently deported.<\/p>\n

In the hearing reviewing Vang\u2019s pardon application, Walz said, \u201cI can find no reason how Minnesota would be safer or better if Mr. Vang is deported.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vang was convicted in 2006 of repeatedly raping a child over a span of two years. Upon his arrest, Vang attempted to excuse his actions to police by calling the assault a \u201cminor thing\u201d and saying, \u201cIt is a cultural thing in Thailand to marry and have sex with girls as young as 12,\u201d according to a Fox News report.<\/p>\n

Vang\u2019s application for a pardon was reviewed by the Minnesota Clemency Review Commission, which, in a 4-2 vote, recommended granting the pardon because of Vang\u2019s \u201cimmigration concerns,\u201d according to documents obtained by Fox News. A commissioner who supported Vang\u2019s pardon noted the criminal \u201cstated the need for clemency related to immigration issues.\u201d Another official wrote that Vang\u2019s six children made his situation a \u201cvery tough case,\u201d and that an absent father was \u201cnot in the best interest of society,\u201d according to Fox News.<\/p>\n

Another commissioner conceded the \u201cextraordinary severity\u201d of Vang\u2019s offense but deemed Vang\u2019s \u201cremorse and acceptance of responsibility\u201d sufficient grounds for a pardon. He also noted that Vang \u201cis facing deportation,\u201d Fox News reported. <\/p>\n

In an application for a pardon, Vang says, \u201cMy fear is that, if deported, my children will grow up without a father, like I did,\u201d Vang wrote, promising commissioners, \u201cI will do all that I can to be here and to protect them from the outcomes of my deportation,\u201d according to Fox News.<\/p>\n

Vang\u2019s expressed fear that deportation would send him to \u201ca place entirely unfamiliar to me, with no family, no home, and no future,\u201d according to Fox News. <\/p>\n

The Minnesota Board of Pardons, consisting of Walz, state Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Natalie Hudson, granted Vang\u2019s pardon on June 10. The pardon revoked Vang\u2019s post-conviction status as an illegal immigrant and removed the conditions necessary for deportation. <\/p>\n

Assistant attorney Tami McConkey in Ramsey County, where the rapes took place, opposed the pardon, Fox News reported. Her opposition statement noted several aggravated features of the assaults, such as the extended time period of the abuse and the lack of sexual protection by Vang. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Mr. Vang expresses shame and regret about what his children experience when then [sic<\/em>] learn of the offense, he does not share any thoughts or insight about what the victim must have gone through,\u201d McConkey\u2019s report wrote, according to Fox News. Government officials slammed Walz\u2019s pardon of Vang early on. \u201cGovernor Tim Walz\u2019s decision to pardon an illegal alien convicted child rapist so he can remain in our country is disgusting,\u201d Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a press release. \u201cThese are the criminal illegal aliens he and his Minnesota sanctuary politicians are protecting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minnesota is listed by the Department of Justice as a sanctuary state, meaning the state limits local and state authorities from assisting federal immigration authorities. <\/p>\n

The Minnesota Clemency Review Commission was created in 2023 under Walz\u2019s leadership to review pardon applications from convicted individuals and make recommendations to the Minnesota Board of Pardons. <\/p>\n
