Demographic changes in one of the wealthiest and most reliably Democratic-leaning counties in the U.S. have forced police officers to use AI translation to overcome language barriers. <\/p>\n

The Fairfax County Police Department launched a pilot program in February that provides police with body cameras capable of translating 57 languages in real time. Officials, of course, frame this move as a forward-thinking tool to \u201cbreak down language barriers\u201d between police and the communities they serve. However, it\u2019s yet another indictment of the effects of unchecked immigration into U.S. communities.<\/p>\n

The technology exists because the county has experienced a significant demographic shift, with some data indicating that there are around 352,000 foreign-born residents, accounting for about 31 percent of the total population. This includes naturalized citizens, legal permanent residents, visa holders, and illegal immigrants. An estimated 39 percent of residents age five and older speak a language other than English at home.<\/p>\n

Fairfax County Police Sgt. Evan Brandolino told WUSA that his officers encounter non-English-speaking people every day while on the job. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe body camera has always been a tool for transparency and accountability, and now I think it is helping bridge that gap,\u201d Brandolino told the outlet. \u201cIt\u2019s helping enhance trust with community members who would otherwise not be able to connect with our officers as easily.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a daily occurrence that our officers encounter individuals who are not proficient in English, and this tool makes it a lot easier and more efficient for them to communicate with them, especially when seconds count,\u201d said Brandolino.<\/p>\n

The Fairfax County Police Department has maintained a Language Support Services Unit since 2004, which handles roughly 800 investigative sessions per year. However, due to decades of high-volume immigration, this unit could no longer handle the caseload. Hence the need for the department to turn to artificial intelligence on body cameras. It shouldn\u2019t be surprising, given how the county has framed the move as positive, that Fairfax County refuses to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). <\/p>\n

Fairfax County operates under a \u201cTrust Policy\u201d that limits local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It does not enforce federal civil immigration law and generally withholds information or detainers except in cases of serious criminal arrests. <\/p>\n

Congressional hearings in May accused state and local officials of prioritizing illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens, adding that their policies that \u201cprohibit cooperation with federal immigration authorities hurt public safety and have devastating consequences.\u201d The hearing highlighted cases where individuals with criminal records were released from custody despite ICE requests.<\/p>\n

But Fairfax County\u2019s policy goes beyond just being a \u201csanctuary\u201d for illegal immigrants. Their AI translation tool is a public notice that county officials no longer consider assimilation a requirement for being in the U.S. No other functioning country on Earth allows unchecked migration without assimilation. Still, it\u2019s become standard practice in one of our wealthiest suburbs sitting right outside Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t have to live this way. Alternatives do exist. If the goal of immigration policy is to benefit the existing citizenry, then at the bare minimum there should be stronger interior enforcement and cooperation with ICE. Fairfax County did not become a jurisdiction requiring AI translators on police body cameras by accident. For decades, local and state officials decided that welcoming large numbers of immigrants was more important than protecting the cohesion and safety of U.S. citizens. <\/p>\n

The need for AI translators on patrol is one data point in that larger reckoning on unchecked immigration that will have to come. In the meantime, public officials, such as those in Fairfax, will continue to paint stories like this as clever technological breakthroughs. But it\u2019s just a patch in a dam ready to break. <\/p>\n
