The House Freedom Caucus (HFC) is pressuring its Republican colleagues to codify key immigration reforms following the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling on birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n

Republicans are trying to find ways to toughen border security policy after the court\u2019s ruling striking down President Donald Trump\u2019s birthright citizenship executive order. The latest push to tighten immigration law comes from the House Freedom Caucus, with several members calling to codify Trump\u2019s signature border policies.<\/p>\n

The immigration bill H.R. 2, also known as the Secure the Border Act, has gained renewed support from conservative congressmen following the ruling. The legislation aims to restrict asylum, targets catch and release and contains additional measures. It has not yet been reintroduced in the 119th Congress. Several members expressed urgency to the Daily Caller, arguing Trump\u2019s border policies must live beyond his administration. \u201cPresident Trump won\u2019t be president forever,\u201d Republican Texas Rep. Keith Self told the Caller. \u201cThe moment he leaves office, future administrations could tear down every border security measure with a single executive order.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo more delays. No more excuses. Congress must pass this bill now and secure the border for good.\u201d <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

H.R. 2 notably passed the House in 2023 but was dead on arrival in the Senate. <\/p>\n

Multiple lawmakers claimed Speaker Mike Johnson promised that he would put H.R. 2 on the floor before July 4, 2026. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to see [Johnson] execute the promise to put H.R. 2 on the floor,\u201d Self said before Independence Day. \u201cIt was supposed to be on this week.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they make a promise to me, and to other members, that we\u2019re going to bring up HR 2 before July 4, and they don\u2019t even try to do that, then you leave me with no choice,\u201d Republican Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison said before lawmakers tanked a rule vote, which was followed by the House going on recess. Some of the gridlock on Capitol Hill could potentially be eased with an H.R. 2 vote, which lawmakers said is crucial to pass before Democrats get an opportunity to undo Trump\u2019s policies. <\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s borders should not be dependent on which political party is in power,\u201d Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy told the Caller. \u201cIf Congress believes in national sovereignty and the rule of law, it must codify President Trump\u2019s border policies into permanent law. Border security is too important to be undone whenever Democrats take back power. It\u2019s time for Congress to stop talking and start acting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what The People demanded \u2013 securing our border,\u201d Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry told the Caller. \u201cWhile President Trump met that mandate and upheld his end of the deal, Congress has not. Codifying these accomplishments \u2013 immediately \u2013 is critical to ensuring the future safety and security of our Nation and her Citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that birthright citizenship is upheld by the 14th Amendment, which was passed following the Civil War with the primary intention of recognizing freed slaves as U.S. citizens. Illegal immigrants have exploited the provision by having children in the U.S., who are frequently referred to as anchor babies.<\/p>\n

While the court\u2019s decision seems set in stone, Republicans are keen on tightening existing restrictions to ensure loopholes like birthright citizenship are difficult to exploit.<\/p>\n
