Kevin Kiley criticized Democratic Gov. John Cornyn Presses Trump\u2019s AG Nominee About DOJ Anti-Weaponization Fund<\/a><\/p>\n<p>California state legislators approved a revamped healthcare tax that would impose higher costs on Californians with private insurance to help safeguard billions of dollars in federal <span>Medi-Cal<\/span> funding, CalMatters <span>reported<\/span> on June 18. If finalized by President Donald Trump\u2019s administration, the move could hike annual healthcare premiums by roughly $400 for a family of four, according to the outlet. <span><strong>(RELATED: Californians Left With Surging Health Insurance Premiums Amid Proposed Tax Increase)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are imposing this new tax that\u2019s gonna raise people\u2019s healthcare premiums [by]hundreds of dollars,\u201d Kiley told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview on Wednesday. \u201cWhat\u2019s even worse is that this is something that the voters have explicitly said the state isn\u2019t allowed to do. So it violates, at the very least, the spirit of \u2026 Proposition 35, which is passed by the voters. So we are encouraging the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to stop this tax from going into effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not something that people in our state can afford,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom signed California\u2019s 2026-2027 state budget into law on June 29 in an effort to enact \u201ca balanced spending plan that protects Californians today while strengthening the state\u2019s long-term fiscal future,\u201d <span>according<\/span> to a news release.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_2 --> <\/p>\n<p>When reached for comment, Newsom\u2019s office referred the DCNF to the California Department of Finance (DOF).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the Trump administration that was advocating for H.R.1 in the first place, which is what necessitated this change,\u201d California DOF Deputy Director of Legislation Christian Beltran told the DCNF in a statement. \u201cWe hope and expect it will be approved by the federal government. Specifically, the MCO Tax authorized by Chapter 24, Statutes of 2026 (SB 125), conforms with new federal requirements in H.R. 1. The tax is structured to apply uniformly across both Medi-Cal managed care plans and commercial plans, as required by H.R. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, voters in California approved Prop 35, which made the Managed Care Organization (MCO) tax permanent, \u201csubject to continued federal approval, and dedicating the resulting revenues to specified Medi-Cal program purposes beginning in 2025,\u201d <span>according<\/span> to the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Prop 35 also requires the DHCS to \u201cconsult with a stakeholder advisory committee prior to proposing or implementing any new provider payments or changes to existing provider payments supported by\u201d the MCO tax.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/10519169\/dailycaller_incontent_3 --> <\/p>\n<p>Kiley claimed in a Monday X <span>post<\/span> that <span>Newsom<\/span> the healthcare tax \u201cwill increase premiums for Californians by hundreds of dollars,\u201d adding that the move \u201cdefies the will of our voters, who passed Prop. 35 to limit such tax increases.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis affront to both affordability and democracy cannot stand,\u201d Kiley claimed in the social media post.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hometransferguide.com\/?p=3538\">Canadian Arrested By ICE In New Jersey After Allegedly Assaulting American Teen For Wearing Pro-Trump Clothing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Republican California Reps. Vince Fong and Jay Obernolte <span>said<\/span> in a June 24  addressed to Newsom and California State Medicaid Director Tyler Sadwith that, \u201cas written, the reworked MCO tax would increase costs on commercial health plans and appears designed to preserve state revenue to offset General Fund obligations, rather than make health care more affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornians are already struggling with high costs of living, including rising housing costs, high gas prices, and mounting pressure on household finances for basic necessities,\u201d according to the letter. \u201cThis proposal would place an additional financial burden on working families, employees, and employers who rely on commercial health insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The California Association of Health Plans (CAHP) claimed in a June 30  that Newsom had \u201capproved a budget that balances the state\u2019s books on the backs of California\u2019s working families and small businesses with a big tax increase on their health coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when Californians are already stretched thin by the rising costs of housing, groceries, childcare, and transportation, adding hundreds of dollars in new health insurance costs is the wrong choice,\u201d according to CAHP\u2019s statement. \u201cPrevious MCO taxes were designed to strengthen Medi-Cal while protecting affordability for Californians with commercial coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California State Assembly Republicans similarly <span>warned<\/span> in a Monday statement that the new health tax is poised to \u201cdrive up premiums for families, workers, and small businesses across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new Healthcare Premium Tax is a wolf in sheep\u2019s clothing,\u201d Assemblyman Carl DeMaio said in a statement. \u201cNewsom and Sacramento Democrats blew billions, can\u2019t balance a budget, and now they want working families to pay the price with another $425 in higher healthcare costs. Californians are already struggling to afford coverage\u2014the last thing they need is another backdoor tax hike from Sacramento.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeMaio and over a dozen other GOP members of the California State Assembly also sent a July 6  to HHS Secretary Robert F.
