President Donald Trump\u2019s pick to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Erica Schwartz told lawmakers Wednesday that she supports vaccine mandates for U.S. military members in certain cases.<\/p>\n

Schwartz, who served<\/span> as Trump\u2019s deputy surgeon general from January 2019 to April 2021, said during a U.S. Senate committee confirmation hearing<\/span> that she would back mandating vaccines<\/span> in the military under \u201ccertain circumstances,\u201d also emphasizing her support for \u201creligious exemptions\u201d to such mandates<\/span>. She has notably drawn criticism from some supporters of the \u201cMake America Healthy Again movement who are skeptical about vaccines. \u201cI, as you know, I spent over 25 years in the uniformed services and I have had my share of making the mandates for influenza and other vaccines, or at least following, I didn\u2019t make the mandate, but I followed leadership as they made the mandate for those vaccines, and I understood why,\u201d Schwartz said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re in congregate living situations, when you\u2019re in submarines, when you\u2019re on ships, [in] close quarters, it is really important to make sure that you\u2019re, you have what we call for self-protection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m fully supportive of, in certain circumstances, mandating vaccines for military members, with the exception of, I believe in religious exemptions, and I believe that if there\u2019s a newer vaccine, there should be some conversation as to whether that newer vaccine should be mandatory,\u201d Schwartz continued. <\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, so you do not believe that it\u2019s irrational and absurd to have a mandatory flu vaccine mandate in the military?\u201d Democratic Maryland Sen. Angela Alsobrooks asked Schwartz.<\/p>\n

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth previously referred to the U.S. military\u2019s flu vaccine requirement as an \u201cabsurd, overreaching mandate,\u201d NPR reported<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of double negatives there, but I think that what you\u2019re asking me is do I believe in vaccine mandates for military members,\u201d Schwartz responded. \u201cI do believe in certain circumstances, yes, there \u2026 should be a requirement to have mandates in the military.\u201d<\/p>\n
